It’s hilarious how everyone expects officials to be perfect when players and coaches aren’t even close to it. These umps and other pro officials are so much better at their jobs than Joe Blow running to the internet to criticize them.

Don't give me that bullshite. Umpires are well compensated, get great benefits, and are members of a union that protects them no matter how much they suck at their jobs.

When I watch professional sports, including professional umpires, I expect better than this:

MLB Umps have the easiest job of the refs in the big 3 sports. Football and basketball officiating is much harder. More moving pieces to deal with.

And for me, it is not just about how bad they are. It is also about how they try so hard to be part of the game. Watch NFL and NBA. When a player goes at them arguing, they usually try to calmly explain what is going on and then try to move on away from them. Sometimes it goes too far and they have to eject or penalize someone, but they handle it much better. Baseball umps make a huge show of the arguing and inject themselves in the show. Tickets are expensive and the message I would send to the umps is we did not come to see you.

They don't ever get punished in any way. A sternly worded warning doesn't mean jack shite to a union member. They'd have to get caught with a dead girl or a live boy to even consider being fired. Angel Hernandez has been a shitty umpire for years and I'm convinced he does it because he knows he can get away with it.

Last year's data showed that the ump was correct 94% of the time.

I'd love to see the numbers on pitches that are within a ball's width of the zone. Most pitches are easy to call, most of us could realistically be at 85-90% with a little training and practice because of pitches that are obviously balls/strikes, even though we see them missed from time to time too.

I really want to know which umpires are most accurate calling the corners. And we know it's not Angel Hernandez.

a ball or two off the plate is crap

If pitchers could get called strikes “a ball or two” outside the zone all the time, hitters would have no Chance.

The handsy ump has such a punchable face

It aggravated me to no end that MadBum couldn't Falcon punch his chubby cheeks to the Moon.

frick the ump's union and the feeling of invincibility it gives these chucklefricks.

Ump publicly apologizes. Everyone knows he was in the wrong and I imagine he was called out by some higher ups.

They need a computerized system, not to call the games, but to judge every call they make. Force the upms to wear shock collars. When the call is wrong, they get shocked. That might help teach them a true strike zone anyway. Doubt we could ever expect more than that. I'd give my left nut for getting balls called right.

That ump identifies as a cop. MB's manager should have intervened when the ump was staring him down. I remember when umps tried to walk away from and deescalate confrontations.

The only defense of the umpire here is the camera angle is not from dead center, so I guess there is a chance the strike zone outline is also off center?

Regardless, the game is in the 4th inning. The ump has by this point "established" his strike zone. As bad as that it is, it is a generally accepted practice. Judging by the reaction of the hitter, he has not only widened the zone, but worse, has done it inconsistently. Ask any player, and the worst thing a plate ump can be is inconsistent.

You know that’s a shitty %, right? Then again, Cubs fan, intelligence isn’t your strong suit.

That ump was creepy as frick but still, the pitches MadBum was salty about were called correctly. He was being a salty bitch which instigated all this foolishness.

I understand calling balls/strikes is insanely difficult and the data shows most MLB umps are remarkably accurate.

But it’s a combination of their attitudes, especially guys like Hernandez and West, and the way the league shields them from public scrutiny.

In all sports, players and coaches should be able to speak their minds about officiating without having to pay ludicrous fines.

It’s not the first base umps job to adjust Bumgarder’s attitude. The ump went in looking to stir the pot. He should be suspended.

I agree....there are balls bouncing in the dirt that the robo umps are calling strikes in the minors where they do use it because it shows the ball crossing the zone.

The Compound Podcast that Ian Happ for the Cubs does = he does it with two of his buddies that are still in the minors and have experienced it. So if you think the players who have played under it are all on board with robo umps you are mistaken.

There's a ways to go in the technology and also there has to be some consensus on what the "real" strike zone is before you can even begin to validate this.

The variables and complications in this are endless.

Players gripe endlessly now because an imperfect template is up there for every pitch to judge the umps. Geez, what other profession is every single decision one makes instantly judged by a system that is flawed?
