those two TDs were 100% on the DC
The first he was distracted by the sideline when the ball was snapped. The sideline was at fault. Not him. The second may have been a poor defensive call but still no excuse to let Smith just run by him.

Mathieu had a great freshman year, but Stingley’s freshman year was one of the greatest seasons by any DB in NCAA history. PFF has multiple articles about Stingley’s season.

You missed Reggie White. Mike Brooks was an LSU guy who had an extremely impactful year, and so did Glen Dorsey.
Reggie is the NFL GOAT DL. His senior season at UTenn maybe. But neither Michael Brooks nor Glenn Dorsey were in the Honey Badger's stratosphere.

Not 100% sure some fault on DC but as a player late in the season you got to be ready for anything. Not being ready when the ball is hiked is a fundamental breakdown on both player and coach.

Stingley was a true Fr. Bad games happen. No reason for us to have been in press coverage. But it was still bad.

It's not a tough comparison. Stingley was the best DB in the country his freshman year. He was better than Delpit and Delpit won the Thorpe

True and if the game plan was for Stingley to be on Smith the ENTIRE game.... then the DC should have told him, "you don't worry about calls from the sideline, you got Smith."

I hate this comparison. TM while his career was shortened due to a few bad decisions, was one of the greatest football players to ever put on purple and gold.
The other had high NFL draft potential while playing as such

Stingley--better freshman and best cover corner.
Mathieu--everything else.
Mathieu--everything else.

First one was on the staff
Gotta get the play in fast enough
The whole defense was caught flat footed.
Second one wasn’t a great call but Stingley just got beat.
He was a TF on an elite WR who was a JR
The thing about being on an island is when you lose your really lose.

They were both very good, but used very differently as freshman. Stingley came in ready to be a true cover corner.
Mathieu came in lacking elite cover skills and was more of a nickel/dime back where he excelled at ball hawking. As the season went on, teams would try to get Mathieu into to single coverage, so he couldn't make one of his many off the ball great plays. Stingley always was used in one on one against a really good receiver.

Objectively Stingley and it wasn't close. Mathieu really came into his own during his sophomore season.

For me, it's not close, the Honey-Badger.

Matthieu was a sophomore that year
The breakout game vs OREGON... he sure was a Sophomore. I remember hearing Ott talk about him as a FR. He said he was always around a loose ball.. turned out to be true...

I don't think either is head and shoulders above the other. Both had great freshman seasons and could have arguments made.
That said, below are some freshman highlights from Tyrann. I count 3 pass deflections that his teammates intercepted. I'm pretty sure those don't count in his own Ints/ fumbles forced, which are already at 7 combined. That's just crazy.

Mathieu was the most impactful player on the field even as a freshman. I thought there was no way he could duplicate what he did. I was very wrong!
This. Stingley was very good. Of course, the expectation level for him was FAR higher than that for Mathieu. That probably hurts the argument in Stingley's favor because he was doing what he was "supposed to do" as one of the highest rated CB prospects in year.
But Mathieu stood out IMMEDIATELY in the first quarter of his first game. I very vividly remember saying to someone I was watching the UNC game with "who in the hell is number 14? He's everywhere." I can't recall a player before or since having such a glaring impact right from the jump

Stingley as a freshman, dude was a first team all American that year and arguably the 2nd best defender in cfb behind chase young. But stingley isn't touching the honey badger's career overall.

You owe it to yourself to go back and objectively compare stats and highlights.
Again, air drop Stingley into 2010. Does he start over PP or Mo? Then air drop HB into '19 and he's the best player on defense from Day 1.

Wait.... you saying TM's LSU career was shortened because of suspension(s)/dismissal from the team... but what about Stingley and injuries?

I saw Brad after the Spring game...he is doing well.
The answer to the question is Stingley.
He is the only player in the history of college Football to be named a Consensus All-American as a true freshman...oh...and Brad Wing was the 1st freshman in LSU History to be named All-American.
And I know them both!
Now...TM's Sophomore year was so good...he got kicked off the team!
