but Stingley’s freshman year was one of the greatest seasons by any DB in NCAA history.

Statistically it pales in comparison to TM7.

If you watch Mathieu's freshman highlights & then Stingley's freshman highlights & still think Stingley had the better season... something is disconnected in your brain.

if the standard is a championship stats don't matter, see Dan Marino or Jim Kelly, two of the greatest flag football players in history, no rings...no care

I don't think some of you realize how good of a single season Stingley had as a freshman. Stingley had a crazy number of pass break ups his freshman year. 6 ints and 15 passes defended. 15 passes defended are about as many as some of these top 10 pick cornerbacks have in their entire college career. Just to put it into context, Sauce Gardner, the corner who was taken at #4 right behind Stingley had 16 passes defended in his entire college career. Jeffrey Okudah who was taken #3 had 18 passes defended in his three year Ohio state career.

I still think the honey badger was better but just because of the impact he had in his two years. It seemed like he had the best instincts for a defensive back I've ever seen.

If that's the case, Michael Divinity was better than Devin White since White never got a championship.

Obviously, every player wants an NC, but just because someone has one, it doesn't make him better than a player who didn't get one.

Honey Badger got better every year. Stingley was a flash in the pan.

Stingley made plays when he had to. BUT....was burned in the Alabama game in 2019. Yeah yeah, he did look to the sidelines in the 2nd qtr and was cooked in the 4th. I don't think he's as good as many think. Noodle body, and too slow. Sorry. He quit on LSU plain and simple. F him and his paw

Titles and wins are team accomplishments. We are talking about individuals.

One was a 3rd round pick and one was the 3rd pick!

I mean TM7 was a 3rd round pick for off the field issues.

Freshman year? Both made an immediate impact on the game but Stingley was the one who had the better all around season as a Freshman.

Mathieu got inserted at nickel and got a strip sack in game 1. He made some really nice plays throughout the season but Stingley dominated the whole season outside of the Bama game.

But Mathieu's 2 seasons were far superior to Stingley's 3 at LSU.

If you built a DB Sting was the prototype, but the impact that the HB had on every single game was astronomically astounding, that a 5’8” 168lb DB could create a Legend from scratch still blows my mind. I can’t wait til tomorrow because now that he’s a Saint I love him more everyday. And no not that way idiot.

Stingley had a better freshman year.

Mathieu had a better peak, but it's close to Sting's freshman season.

PFF has Stingley's freshman seasons as, IIRC, their highest-graded season in their history

You people need to refresh your memories of Mathieu’s freshman year.

57 tackles
8.5 TFL
4.5 Sacks
2 Ints
2 FR
5 FF
7 PBU

Stingley was great as a freshman. Honey Badger was still better.

Also in 2010:
M. Claiborne, 37 tackles, 5 Ints/6 PBU, 1 TFL
P. Peterson, 42 tackles, 4 Ints/6 PBU, 1.5 TFL

Stingley in 2019:
38 tackles, 6 Ints/15 PBU, 1 TFL

Stingley also started & played in all 15 games.
Mathieu played in all 13 games, but started 1.

I'd say 2019 Stingley was better than 2010 Tyrann.

The question was about their freshman year, so neither really matter.
There really is no debate about who had the better career as many others have stated.

What’s funny is…
Honey badger will always be like more than stingley, despite not winning a Natty at LSU

Can't compare given Stingley was part of the greatest cfb ever. Give me TM over Stingley any day in college.

Is this somehow less valuable? He forced more turnovers than Stingley as "just the nickel guy".

Well Stingley was asked to be on guys straight up more meaning he had less of a chance to make plays than Mathieu did since as he was more free roaming over the field as was mentioned. Stingley instead was just making sure no one got open on him(which they didn't).

Overall stats are a bad way to compare the two because Stingley just wasn't even getting thrown at by the end of the year(except Fromm for whatever reason) so obviously he wasn't going to have flashy numbers since they were asked to do different things.
