Mathieu played himself into the field that first year

He was our nickel from game 1, so essentially a starter all year. We played with 5 or 6 DBs more than we played base 4-3.

Also remember that Tyrann was making plays all year. He had a strip sack late vs UNC (game 1) that should've ended that game. I remember a pick vs WVU that snuffed out a late drive in that game as well.

He was doing Honey Badger stuff his whole career, just didn't have the cool nickname yet.

Disagree

Matthieu was better as a sophomore, best defensive year for an LSU player ever. But Stingley’s freshman year he was matched up most times with opponents best receiver. Tyrann was a nickel guy who didn’t even play a majority of snaps until the back end of the season.

The only true thing you said is he was better as a sophomore.

Fulton was matched up against the #1 WR most of the season. Mathieu was making plays from the first game of the season.

He wasn’t locking down any receivers. He was just roaming and used to blitz and cause havoc.

Is this somehow less valuable? He forced more turnovers than Stingley as "just the nickel guy".

A lock down corner will get a few picks but for the most part if he's playing great it doesn't show up in the stat line. It really is a tough comparison with Mathieu as a freshman already showing flashes of the human highlight reel that he would become.

I mean the stats definitely show it

TM7 had a great freshmennyear h it BGE was mostly a role player. He blitzed from the nickel package (where his FF came from) and played a lot of special teams well.

Stingley was a full in starter. Always on the field and those 6 picks came the hard way.

Both had awesome seasons in their own right.

But TM7 had the entire world of sports talking about him and the Honey Badger moniker he got on this very site.

Thanks to Mike Linebacker

Stingley had more responsibility as a boundary corner, and held up as one of the best CBs in college football that year.

I do appreciate what TM did as a freshman but he has a little more freedom & less responsibility to be great. All that in mind, I’d give the nod to Stingley

Both had short careers

Stingley’s was briefer and less memorable

That was his sophomore season not freshman season.

Mathieu was the third best corner on the 2010 team behind Peterson and Claiborne.

You people act like him not being an outside corner makes a difference. He wasn't an outside corner in 2011 either so was Stingley better than him that season too? No, no he wasn't. Just like he wasn't better than Mathieu as a freshman.

Just FYI. By your logic Mathieu was the third best corner on the 2011 team too. Simon and Claiborne played on the outside.

Matthieu and it’s not close. Get real. Stingley is a Matthieu wannabe.

They are two totally different players. Not sure you can say one is trying to be like the other. Stingley is and will always be a true outside corner and the ability to be a great one.

Mathieu at LSU was a nickel corner and is a safety in the pros. He was great at LSU and great in the pros.

Stingley was shutting down his side of the field as a freshman and helped us win a natty. I’d give the edge to Sting. Now, overall LSU career? Mathieu by a mile
