Freshman year only it’s Stingley by a mile. He led the SEC in interception and was a first team all American. Mathieu wasn’t even a starter.

Stingley was awesome his freshman year, but nobody was head-and-shoulders above Mathieu in his freshman year.

TM didn't even start the first game against NC and had 9 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. He was awesome from the beginning. He finished 1st in the SEC in forced fumbles (5th nationally), 1st in the SEC in fumble recoveries, he led the team in pass breakups and he even had 4.5 sacks on the year. He won the Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP with 7 tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a sack.

Nobody was a better cover corner than Stingley in his freshman year, but again, no one was a lot better than Mathieu in his freshman year as an overall player. He was the ultimate play-maker.

Post your age if you think Stingley had the better FR year. No way you actually watched Matheiu’s first year and think this

If you enrolled Stingley as a true Fr in 2010, does he start (with PP and Mo)?

If you put Tyrann on '19 as a true Fr he would have been the best player on the field.

Mathieu was just magical on a football field. The most instinctive player I have ever seen.

Mathieu coming in and getting those stats while earning playing time with the likes of Pat P, Mo Claiborne, Ron brooks, Jai Eugene, and freshman 5 stars Craig Liston and Eric Reid is enough to give him the nod right then and there.

You missed Reggie White. Mike Brooks was an LSU guy who had an extremely impactful year, and so did Glen Dorsey.

But TM7 had the entire world of sports talking about him and the Honey Badger moniker

Hardly anyone in the country had any idea who he was after his freshman season.

TM had the most big plays. Always around the ball. Stingley was a beast his freshman year but that was pretty much his career.

2011 TM7 should’ve won the Heisman. Have never seen a single defensive player in my lifetime impact a game as much as he did. So many momentum changing plays. Legend.

Him being suspended and Ron brooks (tyfys) stepping in and while not replacing TM7 but proving to keep that defense nasty is why TM7 didn’t win it.

Mathieu never had an off game his freshman year. Dude was an instant star. Stingley had a great freshman season too but those freshman year stats were sick

Mathiew was the best “football player” I have ever seen at LSU.
Dude was one turnover machine and the best punt returner I’ve ever seen wearing the purple and gold.
Stingley was great as a freshman but I can’t see anyone being better than The badger.

Playing nickel cb in man is harder than playing outside cb in man .

Not all outside cbs can be a nickel cb

Stingley had some issues in the Bama game. Albeit against great players on a huge stage, but if we're talking about freshman year, he had an off game in the biggest game of the year.
