What are some examples that immediately come to mind of college and pro teams that lost a massively important game in heartbreaking/humiliating fashion to the point the affects lingered for years onward to detriment of said franchise?

In 2007 some blue blood lost to Appalachian State. Haven't seem to recover since.

I disagree. It was the home Bama game in 2012 following that. We were the better team. We played better. I will never forget that experience inside Death Valley that night

Not a game, but the 2004 ALCS broke the Yankees.

Yankees were up 3-0 in the series and looked like they were headed to their 7th World Series in 9 years. Games 4 and 5 went a combined 26 innings, and effectively wore down the Yankees. They went from looking to sweep to winning in 5 to “oh shite” in just 2 games.

Since that ALCS, the Yankees have won just 1 World Series and the Red Sox have won 4.

I'm not sure if the '04 ALCS "broke" the Yankees. They made the playoffs the next three years and eight out of the following nine years. Furthermore, their postseason failings has been largely due to their starting pitching. Check out their starting pitcher ERAs in the postseason series they have lost. It's absolutely atrocious. They just haven't been good enough more than they were psychologically broken by the Red Sox and never recovered.

Mike Bibbi and Vladi were an awesome team. It’s a shame they were compile the same time the Shaq/Kobe lakers were rolling

After Ala beat Miami in 92, the canes really struggled through the end of the decade.

Zaza Pachulia’s paid hit on Kawhi fricked the Spurs over and they have also not recovered.

Most humiliating loss I've ever seen from the Orangemen. The beginning of a long descent down the hill of suckitude.
