Lumber prices.

I’m building a smallish workshop in my backyard. For me and my dad. By the time we are finished with this wood shop and in it, we will not be able to afford any materials to build any projects.
Now an enjoyable father and son pastime is walking around Lowes or (name another) buying what we need and laughing at prices. The other day it was a 2x4. A bin of scrap 2x4 pieces. All cut to 2.5 or 3’. We did not measure only chuckled. 4 bucks a piece. This is not some quality piece of scrap wood. These were the average 2x4 every “Baw” has in the back of a pick-up that gets used like a pick-up.
Cedar fence planks were 5 bucks.
When is the last time any of you guys have been to a quality lumberyard? With true hardwoods and exotics. We have Clark’s and Houston Hardwoods here. I was just wondering how this translated to the “good stuff”? I haven’t been since the previous spike in lumber was starting to go down.

I bought 146 linear feet of treated 2X4 last week for over $400. 3/4" plywood is $77/sheet.

The American opportunity to build and own the dream home is slowly disappearing

Houston Harwoods and Mason's Mill in Houston certainly haven't been immune to price increases. The 3/4" Baltic Birch I used for cabinet boxes was $25 a sheet at the beginning of this mess. Now it's listed at like 80 and hasn't been available in forever.

I have to drive 1.5 hrs to DFW to find anything than framing pine.

I need to replace the deck boards on my pier. 14x20. 16 foot 2x6 is $35. Just the decking is over $1300…. $1300….
That’s crazy. Glad a rebuilt the walkway last year.
I’ve got some scrap osb flooring I’m just gonna overlay the decking with for now. It will look shitty, but I can’t make myself pay those prices right now.

With me being a carpenter and seeing how fast prices were rising I knew it was time to pull the trigger on a mill.
This thing will pay for itself very fast considering this is only 8hrs of cutting
(It’s a Lucas 10-30)

You got any oak beams? Looking for 10x10x12 and 8x8x10

Sure don’t.
Pine is the only thing I’ve cut so far and im currently not selling .
All of this is for my pole barn .
Once I get all of my personal buildings done I’ll transition to selling.

Look for a mill running pine near you, I found a place with kiln dried lumber in any size that is way cheaper than the box stores. Now the wood wasn't CHEAP but it was cheaper and looks way better. A 2X4X8 would run $5 vs $8 at a box store.

Where is this mill you speak of?

Besides D.R. Horton and DSLD buying every piece of lumber around

Which is great for when the price dumps. Hope they get stuck holding those shitty houses.

Lumber these days is such bad quality compared to what was used 30+ years ago when trees grew slow and contained sap.
Today pine trees are basically producing thick cardboard. You can drive a nail with one hit.
Prices at this level are insane considering the quality and the fact that there is no shortage of trees that produce five lumber

I can think of one.
Supply and demand. When people quit buying it the price will go down. It always has.
I’m not happy about the prices either, but until the market becomes saturated with overpriced lumber, it will stay overpriced.

Did anybody else see a price for cedar and pine fence pickets drop by nearly a dollar over the last 48 hours besides me?

got 2 quotes for 96 linear ft of 2x10 rough cut cedar last week. $1400 and $900
Posted on 3/25/22 at 8:58 pm to BRgetthenet
