World’s largest cast-iron skillet weighing 14,000 pounds spotted on Tenn. highway

quote:

Some drivers in Tennessee got quite an eyeful on Wednesday when they spotted a giant, cast-iron skillet hauled on a flatbed truck on I-59.

According to WZTV, the massive skillet, which is said to be the largest in the world, was traveling to the Lodge Cast Iron Shop in South Pittsburg, Tenn., where it will eventually be placed on display at a museum of cast iron products opening this summer on the premises.

The giant skillet weighs 14,360 pounds and measures 18 feet from one handle to another.

I couldn't decide if first we make a roux or one big arse pan of cornbread.

There's a very short video at the link.

Probably should've turned it around for the trip really. Pretty nice seasoning job though.

Needs a few more coats to cook a decent big arse pan of cornbread, though.

The skillet that's used (or used to be used) at the annual World's Fried Chicken festival up in Kentucky near the home of KFC is possibly larger, but divided into segments because they do cook in it and monitor the temperatures in the different parts.

(If you haven't been to South Pittsburg and visited their seconds store, it's just off I-24.

I've been there a few times. I'm not a big fan of newer Lodge. I do have a few pieces if early Lodge, and even a likely Blacklock skillet from the very early days before they were called Lodge.

I wonder how much oil it takes to season that thing.

There are only two small “issues” with modern Lodge cast iron: weight, lack of smooth cooking surface. One of which can easily be resolved with the proper tools in your home shop and another seasoning treatment.

Serious question to those in manufacturing: how do you fab a giant one off like that?
