There are only two small “issues” with modern Lodge cast iron: weight, lack of smooth cooking surface. One of which can easily be resolved with the proper tools in your home shop and another seasoning treatment.

I prefer buying/finding good old pieces than refinishing a new Lodge.

I have an electrolysis and lye tank. I can strip the worst piece with little effort.

I mainly cook with two Wagner #8 skillets and a Birmingham #10. I have a very good early Birmingham #5 for cornbread and other pieces I use occasionally like camp ovens and such.

I get that, and I’m the same way, but $20 in tools, some canola oil, time and elbow grease + any modern Lodge piece can be as good as a sweet Griswold / Wagner garage sale find. Being were I live, it is a lot easier / cheaper / less time involved than latter. Folks in Ohio or Western PA, etc. probably have better chance finding Griswold / Wagner treasure than me out on the NW Pacific coast.

Serious question to those in manufacturing: how do you fab a giant one off like that?

Where was it manufactured since it was heading to the Lodge Factory?

One mile north of Alabama, five miles WNW of Georgia, along the Tennessee River.

That's true, and I haven't really thought about that.

Like here in AL and surrounding states, you can't go anywhere without seeing something by Birmingham Stove & Range. You can buy them all day long. Martin Stove is a less common maker for this area, too, and I really like those.

Speaking of Birmingham pieces, if you are ever looking for something specific, don't hesitate to buy their stuff online if you get the chance. The older, Red Mountain series in particular is really good, but all of them are great users. Hell, I have two #14 skillets that are gigantic. One I use on the grill and the other just hangs around.

Going to a museum, so they probably used something like Herculiner. Only outstanding question is whether or not they got it on their Hootus?

Everything in Tennessee is big like that.

Skillets, our IQs, women's tits, and our dicks.
