With property crime getting absurd in Alexandria, La I have been kicking around the idea of getting a Doberman, German Shepard, or Rottweiler. I honestly don’t care if it’s mean but mainly as a deterrent. We live in a good neighborhood and take the usual precautions (cams, motion lights, tons of exterior lighting). I would just feel much better leaving on trips (we take quite a bit ) if we had a beastly looking dog roaming the property while we’re gone. Does anyone have any experience with these breeds ? I do have a three year old son so I would have to make sure it was safe. Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you have someone reliable that can care for your dog that much?

I have a 6.5lb rescue black cat that's the meanest motherfricker ever created. She has a 5' vertical leap, razor blades for hands and a ratchet arse meow that will scare the hell out of anyone. If anyone ever breaks in and she doesn't immediately attack, I could always throw her at their face like a ninja star.

Yes, my lab.

She would want to eat up anyone who she thought didn't belong or wasn't invited to our house.

I have a few friends close by that could check up on him. I would plan for this to be mostly an outside dog that we’d allow inside here and there. (Mainly when it’s freezing outside and stuff )

I think the Special Forces had one of those with them when they went after OBL’s arse in Pakistan. If it’s a good enough breed for Seal Team Six it’s probably good enough for the OP.

When I got married I inherited a Rottweiler that was very loyal to and protective of my wife's (no pics) family. I think it was about six months before I could go into the backyard by myself without her showing her teeth and giving me a low growl, and at least a year passed before she would let me pet her. After that, though, we got along fine and she was a really good watch dog. Had god awful farts though. When she got too sick to have a good quality life, I was the one who was with her when they put her down because it was so hard on the family. Had to muzzle her because she was growling at the vet until the very end.

I got white boxers. They are truly big babies, great with children, and tend to scare people for some reason. For some reason I get asked if they are Pitbulls, Dogo Argentinos, or American Bulldogs and when going for walks some people see them and go out of their way to avoid them. They are not as big as any of those breeds ,but I guess the white color throws people off people tend to be scared of them for some reason.

There are a few red flags to your post which make me think having any of these breeds would be a mistake for you. These dogs are instinctively protectors, but they have to be a socialized into an organized environment as to not let let these tendencies take over the household.

If you're buying a guard dog to leave while you are gone to guard the property and travel frequently, you might as well buy a security system that doesn't' need food, water, or emotional comfort.

If you don't care if its mean, why would you expose a 3 year old to a potentially dangerous breed?

I have Rottweilers and I'm on my third one. They are magnificent animals when treated accordingly. I will probably never have any other type of dog as I know and appreciate the breed and its advantages and disadvantages. Not everyone is prepared or capable of handling a physically imposing working dog. Know your limits and get something that yaps a lot.

Had one … but apparently it retired last year without telling me. Doesn’t wake up for nothing now.

You want a Belgian malinois. There isn’t a better dog for the job.

That being said, have it professionally trained and be prepared to exercise and work it. They are literally the most active dogs in the world.

If you want something a bit less intense, a working line German shepherd will do as well.
