It is what it is. Coaches can come and go at the drop of a hat, so it seems fair enough. LSU fans are mad right now because we are losing people to the portal at our expense. Michigan State fans for example probably love the portal because it helped them get back to relevance very quickly. Like it or not, college football has changed. Players and coaches are mercenaries who work for the highest bidder. Adapt or get left behind.

I don't think it's fair to compare coach to a player in this. He is the paid boss, the players are athletes given an education.

It is not the same game as I grew up with. IMO. almost everything that's changed over the last 50 years has been for the worse.

OT is an exception. Replays maybe.

I DESPISE the portal and NIL.

There are multiple reasons why this is a dumb comparison.

1. Coaches have contracts, often with buyouts. So they are restricted.

2. Players are at school for 3-5 years. Coaches are in their careers and can coach for decades. People say Brian Kelly “jumped” and left his players. He was there for 12 years.

Players have always been allowed to transfer. The portal is just the new “marketplace” bringing buyers (coaches) & sellers (players) together easily.

The hard part for long time fans is the fact that players are not required to sit out a year & can play immediately. This new rule has nothing to do with the portal & a lot to do with Covid-19. I think this was a good idea for the 2021 recruiting class as they were not allowed to visit schools during their recruitment. But now the genie is out of the bottle & we have to live with the consequences of the NCAA’s decision. So far, this has been a pretty big negative for LSU. Hopefully it will be a positive starting with this recruiting class.

As for Joe Burrow, it has been correctly stated that he came to LSU as a college graduate. This gave him immediate eligibility. Grad transfers have been granted immediate eligibility for a long time (since at least 2011). He did not come through the portal as it did not exist at the time of his transfer.

Here is a good read on this topic

Then they should have to sit out a year.
You can’t compare student athletes to coaches
Who aren’t leaving because they’re not getting the playing time they think they deserve.

I don’t think the NIL has the negative impact on college football as much as the transfer portal is. That thing is an absolute shite show. Go to a program and give it 2-3 years and take your time when you’re committing to school. Also, can we get rid of the damn early signing period and have the normal one in early February? It’s too damn much. Also, there needs to be deadlines to when players can enter the transfer portal, I think transferring mid season should be a no go.

We wouldn’t have had Burrow without the ability to transfer

He was a graduate transfer. Immediate eligibility for people transferring after their freshman year seems to not be working out too well. They should have to sit a year imo if they aren't a grad transfer.

I might agree that it should be after the season has ended. From my understanding there is some sort of deadline they have to declare by to be eligible for the upcoming season. This is dependent upon the sport.

As it is now it’s bad in my opinion, you should lose a year of eligibility if you transfer, especially if you transfer in conference.

Between NIL and the portal CFB is a shite show.

This is comparing apples to oranges. Coaches have binding contracts with buyouts. There is a caveat. But I'd be all for these NIL deals including buyouts and non competes so it can be equal footing and comparable to your "Coaches leave"example. Something needs to be in place to protect the current school they play for. Otherwise it's going to get way out of hand with these NIL agents poaching kids left and right.

So free market and letting someone earn as much money as they want with little to no restriction, the bedrock principal of a capitalistic society, is now being blamed on the "libs and their fricked up ideas"? Seriously...make it make sense!!!

Easy fix here is to make NIL a 4 year contract. Dont like it, pay it back.

That would cut down on portal movement as well. These kids want to be treated like professionals in college, make them sign their college years away.

What we all grew up with and loved is fading fast into semi-pro garbage.

Between the portal and NIL, it’s over.

Is what it is but I hate it.

I don't know why people still bring up Burrow when talking about the new transfer rules.

Burrow graduated, so he earned the right to play right away.

The grad transfer rule is relatively new in the grand scheme of things. LSU fans just like to rationalize away Burrow quitting on OSU, to use the parlance of our times.

Also, nothing prevents LSU from getting guys from the portal, either. Orgeron was just terrible at roster management and we really didn't take advantage of it. Kelly better be more prepared for modern CFB transfer scenarios.

So because they have different forms of compensation, we should require one to be stuck at a school?
