Time is running out for Oklahoma lawmakers. They have until April 2 to reach a spending deal or teachers will strike en masse.

Oklahoma’s teachers are rebelling against years of deep cuts to education that have left 20 percent of public schools on a four-day-week schedule and average teacher salaries ranked 49th in the country. Last year, about a quarter of the state’s public school teachers left the state or quit teaching altogether.

Oklahoma finds itself in a budget bind after lawmakers slashed taxes for businesses and high earners year after year. A round went into effect in 2009; then taxes were lowered further in 2012 and 2014. The tax cuts were supposed to lead to an economic boom. Instead, they triggered a massive budget gap of about $1.5 billion each year.

To deal with the shortfall, the government cut spending everywhere. The cuts to education were so deep that 20 percent of the state's public schools had to switch to a four-day school week. Oklahoma teachers made an average salary of $45,276 in 2016, according to the National Education Association; the state is ranked 49th in average teacher salaries. The last time teachers got a raise from the state was in 2008. Lawmakers weren’t planning to give them one next year either.

Why do public school teachers think we should keep giving money to schools? Year after year they produce the same dumb arse kids

Most of the education funding at the school up here in my little town comes from oil royalties. So, our teachers, thankfully, already make well above state average and got yet another 6.5% raise just last year (although property tax increase paid for that one).

But yeah, everywhere else is a mess. Every other school district in our county is about to strike. Government gridlock and budget crisis isn't just in D.C...

I say the exact same thing about welfare recipients, but we keep giving them money.

Your reasoning is circular.

Because they are run by the government. I wish someone would show the total amount of money spent on teachers’s salaries compared to the administrators. I read years ago that the number of students increased 9% and the number of administrators increased more than 50%.

Parents produce the kids and have equal responsibility as well

We spend a ton on technology that is really worthless. Kids don’t have textbooks anymore. It’s all on computers, even in the lower grades. We spend a TON on ed programs that don’t work. Last, we spend a ton on “reading and math coaches” and people who we have to hire just to file paperwork for the state and fed.

Because all the money goes to administratiors. They’re the most top-heavy organizations known to man. For every two teachers, there’s an administrator, either in their building or at the district office, doing nothing and making six figs.

All my life, and I'm in mid 50's now, the mantra has been "Schools need more money". All my life the school systems have been on a downward trajectory. Conclusion: Spending more money on schools contributes to their descent.

Prove the theory false. I dare you! Freeze school budgets and see if they stop sliding downward.

Median household income in Oklahoma is $48,038. So a two-teacher household in OK would nearly double median household income in the state. Just FWIW.

I’d bet it would rank well below other households with two college educated adults.
