No conference and nothing on the horizon except possibly merging with the MWC. Has to be promotion from within unless Smith takes everyone with him. Small group of 5 up and comer?

They'll likely promote Trent Bray

There are three names I think that deserve attention.

Sean Lewis (Colorado OC)
Ryan Grubb (Washington OC)
Brent Brennan (San Jose HC)

Lewis has to want out of Colorado. He was winning bowl games at Kent State. He can coach.

Grubb may be in line for better jobs than OSU.

Brennan was the WR coach there before taking over at San Jose.

I did see Bronco Mendenhall mentioned as a candidate. Would he come out of retirement for it?

He didn't retire. He simply resigned from VA and flatly stated he was not retiring.

There are a lot of good coaches in the MWC. No reason they can't get a good coach.

Lewis would probably rather get an OC job at a decent P5 than go to a MWC level HC job.

Too much uncertainty at OSU and WSU for an up and coming coach to risk I think.

Kerry Eggers

Two strong candidates being considered by Oregon State: Trent Bray and Paul Chryst, the latter being interviewed Monday. Chryst, the former head coach at Wisconsin, is serving as an analyst at Texas this season. He is also being considered for the Indiana job. With his resume and background as O-coordinator at OSU, the Beavers should hire him if they can get him.

lolzzzz Quite the fall for Chryst.

They need to stay away from retreads. Mendenhall and Chryst are where they are for a reason.

Chryst doesn't think recruiting is important.

That would go well at a school that already has built in disadvantages.

I'd say Chryst needs to go D3 if he doesn't want to recruit, but it's probably even more important at that level since your recruiting is literally funding the university.

Because they give away free money. Lots of it. You don't even have to be good.

It's not that important at a G5 school anyway.

It's extremely important. Need to be able to discern 3s that are really 4s and the 3s that are really 1s and 2s; and the 2s that are 3s. And you need speed/quickness (over size) and you need team players.

I feel bad for Oregon St, a little bit, with all the conference changes. I think things will pan out. I'm hoping someone hits a big reset button on all of this.

I’d like to see what Mullen could do out there.
