Gus Malzahn went 68-35 (.660)

Took Auburn to a national championship after one of their worst seasons ever, won the SEC West twice during the height of Saban’s Bama dynasty (who he defeated 3 times). Never had a losing record. Won 8 or 9 games every year with an occasional conference championship run

and they fired him

that's not unique to Auburn. Les Miles was better than that and got fired. Other SEC examples exist.

They pay a lot, directly in the most talented area in the country, proven that even mediocre coaches can win a national title there, and when you get invariably fired you will get paid $10M+ not to work.

After 2013, he lost at least 4 games every year and lost 5 or more in four of those seven years.

Gus was a high floor coach, but after 2013 he was a pretty low ceiling coach for a big school in the SECW. In the seven years after 2013, he had only two top 15 finishes at a school with a historical ranking around 15ish.

Money, resources, fan support, recruiting footprint, historical top 15 or so program, chance to compete for championships.

They have a rabid fan base, much like LSU. Its a double edged sword. When you're winning it propels things even faster, when losing the wheels come off quickly.

With Alabama rolling, it takes some of the shine off because you have to compete with that every day. But also with Bama recruiting nationally, theres plenty of in state talent to pull.

There haven't been that many teams that have won a NC over the past 20 years. Auburn's one of them. Also their location is favorable to a lot of recruiting hotbeds.

Auburn *can* win with the right coach, and that plays right into a coach's ego. They all think they're special and they can make a difference if they just have a shot at a school that has enough resources. There are plenty of programs out there that can't say the same.

Here is a fact about Auburn.

The last coach to have a comfortable exit was Shug Jordan back in the 1970's.

Even Pat Dye who did an outstanding job in the 80's and brought Auburn back left with the NCAA at Auburn's front door and then in fact, they got nailed for a few seasons.

Terry Bowden went 47-17-1 after him then he left abruptly in 1998 for a few reasons

Then Tuberville came in and the boosters have played an even bigger role ever since then I think??

never have heard of such an elitist group when it comes to boosters like they have at Auburn.

What does this mean? Tubs and Chizik are on good terms with Auburn and Gus certainly isn't on bad terms.

If getting fired in a minimally hostile way means "not a comfortable exit" - then it's pretty rare to have that in the SEC.

I didn't say they weren't

Okay I could have worded it better.

It's just magnified different at Auburn b/c of the boosters. I think that some coaches out there may be turned off by that. I know that the money will never be a problem thogh.

Here is a fact about Alabama, LSU, UGA, UT, and UF.
Go down the list about "exits."

I don't think too much of it surrounds the exit, maybe we have more pre-departure mini-scandals (some are real scandals) - like Gus almost getting the boot whatever year that was, Harsin in Feb, Jetgate, etc.

But I think most of our actual separations are pretty mundane - Harsin is the first one in forever where I think there will actually be some bad blood on both sides.

Yeah good call. The Jetgate thing was something that happened while I was living up there in 2003. It was something else to see Auburn go undefeated the next year.

Wouldn't that be a lesson to the Auburn boosters though that they aren't always right? I mean being in a position of power and having money I guess trumps that even if they're wrong but when are they going to take a hint and back off?

Harsin seems like a good football coach but the radio guys where I live wouldn't shut up about how he never really visited Alabama high schools until it was too late and how bad that hurt Auburn's recruiting. Is that accurate? Cause you can't always go with the local radio guy's word. Obviously.

We found out later that they wanted to help pack his bags at Boise. His competency is suspect.
