What do you think our record needs to be to give recruits and fans confidence in CAG? Is 7-5 good enough?

Until / Unless he turns into James Franklin after like 6 years, confidence for me will always be based on the eye test - tough team with a competent and entertaining offense and defense.

All SEC schedules are just insane, and clearly, the Texas schools will always have more money to spend.

Joe Montana / Steve Young
Alex Smith / Mahomes

No matter the situation, it's a no brainer to hold on to QB talent within reason.

Alabama, USC, Steve Spurrier - Florida, Pat Dye - late eighties

If we are in such penny-pinching mode that we can't afford to give a talented Knight a year trial period - to doesn't matter anyway - as we are not on track to be a winning program.

If I'm dealing with uncertainty of my last $2 M , it will be at the QB position. Plenty supposed portal transfer "starters" just suck and never see the field.

He coached Brock Purdy,

All this tells me is that the QB coach and Golesh are doing the kid and his dad a favor based on a relationship. Don't really like it, to be honest.

somebody doesn't watch the NFL. It is littered with G5 players.

Less than 2% of college players make the NFL, so good luck with that type of evaluation.

Auburn needs portal players to be good now, and not to be good 3 or 4 years later in the myriad of development opportunities the NFL might present (special teams, practice squad etc).

Also with Cignetti and the "16 players for JMU" there was added value in that he coached them all (developed them) and they all were obviously in the same system. Not the same as getting guys from just random small schools.
Scared money don't make money or whatever the hell Billy Napier said.
Probably gonna look ridiculous at some point or another.

Personally would of rather gave Ashton 750k to be a backup than Deuce 2M

That was never even possible as Ashton wants to be a starter and he has only one year left.

Not if you feel he starts the following season. 2M is have a starting salary. It is worth it.

For sure - we'll never have a better situation given that DK has the opportunity to learn the offense from a 3 year veteran.

If we're not extending ourselves (I think we are) to keep him, we might as well fold up shop. We should have $2 M in spare change floating around.

The 3 teams Coleman is down to: aTm, Texas, Texas Tech

Interesting. If he's smart he'll go to TT. Make the most money and abuse the Big 12.
This is a bit of a unique situation where you have a one year QB come with the current coach as well as someone who seems to be as talented as the Knight kid. Worth it to pay a premium for the Knight kid.

Er body knows he's figuring out how to save face on the Gram after being offered $75K from BC.
That guy is going to die in a Malzahn offense with Malzahn / Herb Hand offensive line.

FSU is an infinite cluster.

Seriously, it would be hard to blame any semi-proven QB for at least slow playing, give the amounts of money being thrown around.

Just taking the USF staff and team isn't going to win us games

Er body knows the plan is to take only the staff and the offense.
That would have won us games last year, and it most likely will this year.

The pro potential thing was a tree in the forest of issues.

So what train wreck was of greater magnitude than the failure to recruit
offensive line talent?

For sure not anything of defense and not QB with Nix and Stidham.
quote:

Do you truly believe if he was competing for SEC championships every year we wouldn't have seen an uptick in wr and o line recruiting? Ill concede we would lose a dude or two bc the negative recruiting angle is real but to act like it's this unmovable obstacle is ridiculous.

Uh, yes, the Gus system clearly became an unmovable object at least for '18, '19, and '20.

The reports of Braden Smith lacking NFL ready skills / development came out.

2017 we were right there for the SEC Championship, so just based on winning we should have been able to recruit better.

Having Golesh will be detrimental to signing top QBs and WRs. NFL is scared of evaluating them.

I'm really optimistic that he'll do basic UT and USF to get the ball rolling (the first year) and then he'll make changes / adjust as needed. They weren't doing UT and USF when they were at Iowa St.

To have success, it seems you basically have to run the UT offense when you're at USF.
Continue to emphasize the star ratings and eventually get excellent coaching.

3 of the 4 teams in the final four of the playoffs are basically all 4 and 5 stars.

Auburn has done it before and can do it again (especially since it is now legal to pay players).
quote:

Does the Rose Bowl finally prove that coaching > talent?

No, not at all. Excellent coaching > slightly above average coaching when the talent level is decent across the board.

As alluded to in prior posts, QB play is supreme, and Mendoza is very talented. Getting him was superior talent acquisition.

quote:

I think that we are going to see that, even with a substantial talent reduction, we will be a much better team next year.

That only speaks to the deficiencies of Freeze as a coach. Being better than a team that lost to Kentucky at home is no statement on how coaching might mean more that talent.
quote:

How are the coaches supposed enforce discipline in this environment?

Show they can develop players, win, and put folks in the NFL.
Most of the talented players aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, but they are not irrational.
quote:

You pivot once you stabilize. And that'll happen naturally for a program like Auburn. We start going 9-3 again and top guys are gonna wanna come be a part of the group that gets back to the top. Go 10-2 the next year and more guys are ready to hop on board.

Totally agree with the basics of this. Just end the misery.
I'm fine with 7-5 (assuming we are in 3 of the 5 losses) with a competent, fun, exciting offense. Also a sustainable offense - almost forgot that part.

This whole thing might swing on Bryrum Brown.
quote:

For me, if a guy enters the portal, our time together is over. I’m not groveling for you to come back as tough as it may be. Just seems like a principle I’d like to stand on.

Per Jimmy Johnson philosophy, depends on the talent level of the player.
If the talent level is high enough, every coach in America is groveling for you to come back. Any rhetoric to the contrary is absurd. Some you just leave to door open for, some you close the door.
