Was this the best time to fire Jimbo Fisher

Forgive me for not following or paying much attention to aTm's football program.
But this wasn't a bull market for head coaching gigs.
I was wondering if they wouldn't have had better possibilities later down the life of Jimbo's contract.
I mean the guy did lose his two top QB's this year.

It was worth it to buy him out. Some of the “inside the football ops” reports that have come out since his firing made it sound like the program was quickly going off the rails. They had legit support to fire him a year ago but the buyout scared them off.
So far it’s been a rather weak candidate pool, I’m sure it will get better as we get into December. That being said, Elko is probably the right hire for that program right now. He’s apparently a coach loved by his players, he’ll also give the fans hope. The question is, can he sustain the recruiting and continue to win after Jimbo’s recruits have used their eligibility, and that’s only because his HC resume is short.

I mean... Brian Kelly wasn't technically available. Woodward went out, sold him on LSU and got him.

That's part of the problem. He's lost his top two qb's a couple years in a row now. Some people blame the scheme and o-line coaching for the ongoing quarterback problems. One of the big articles from ESPN or maybe the Atlhetic had a glaring stat for how often his QB's get touched by defenders.

No. We all know that isn't true. But there was talks of Day, Aww Shucks Dabo, and some other higher named coaches that weren't comfortable how hot their seat was becoming.
In all seriousness, I'm wondering if you knew he was gone and the play was to fiee him; why not do it a little further down the road when there was a bigger hire?

I think the moneybags were just done with Jimbo for a number of reasons. And Elko had more enthusiasm from Aggie fandom than some people on this board seem to share.
It's the Aggie way; 2 of our last 3 head coach hires were former A&M assistants. Franchione had coached at two other Texas colleges and recruited Texas high schools. RC Slocum was an assistant promoted up. Elko makes a lot of sense from that perspective. Jimbo was the anomaly.

I think Aggie handled it like we all expect Aggie to handle major decisions.... poorly.
Should've waited till the season was over, lined up a solid replacement and then canned Fisher. Honestly, they should've just accepted mediocrity for the rest of Fishers tenure then started a rebuild. They had the recruiting locked down.

Kind of what I was thinking.

most seem to focus on Jimbo's dated offense, but man 2 places in a row he's left a locker room in shambles. Roster management is clearly not his strong suit

Due to the lack of interest in the job, the consensus among coaches appears to indicate that aTm did a poor job of firing Jimbo.
I will never understand why aTm would not wait this out until they had a home run hire lined up, even if it took 1 more year. Now they are locked in to an inexperienced head coach for at least 3 years.
