Sounds like VT is gearing up for a coaching change. Expect Fuente to be let go next week (his buyout drops on the 15th). Sounds like VT is interested in:

Luke Fickell (Cincinnati)
Charles Huff (Alabama)
Tony Elliott (Clemson)

I don't see Fickell being interested in that opening, but it sounds like VT is going to at least make him say no.

What's the deal with Fuente? He was excellent at Memphis, yet based not just on W/L record but all of the transfers out of the program it sounds like VT is a train wreck.

Actually it sounds a hell of a lot like Norvell at FSU, too. What is Memphis doing to these guys

Yeah no idea what happened to him. He was a top name coming out of Memphis but has really struggled at VT. Struggled to recruit talent and seems to be unable to keep the players happy. And it's not like it's all Beamer players he's run off, at this point it's all kids he recruited

Pretty shocked Fuente failed. He seemed like a sure thing out of Memphis.

VaTech and USC had openings that same off-season. Carolina insiders swore up and down Fuente was never in play. He didn't vet, they'd said, because he hated recruiting, was abrasive with boosters, and wasn't comfortable with the spotlight on him. Fuente was (mistaken) that the VaTech job wouldn't require as much work, and could largely be a gameday coach.

Not saying it's a hard gig, but VaTech requires a lot more work than just showing up on Saturdays.

Fuente had a good first year at VT from what I remember. Struggled the first part of the season but closed strong. Thought he was set for a few good runs after that. Apparently not.

My two cents...and I am a little sad because Fuente does seem like a legitimate good guy...and those who have spoken with him think he is genuine.

1. Brought along a lot of staff from Memphis that was not ready for D1. One fired for affairs on the road, best asst coach went to Alabama, the OC is hot garbage and despite Jerry Kill telling Fuente that he is a clown and to fire him, Fuente ignored and he went to TCU

2. Alienated a lot of the football alumni...he would not allow the 99 team to be recognized

3. Recruiting is not his thing...the last two years are disastrous...the Bearcats had 3 more 4 stars than we did

4. First year took Beamers talent plus Jerod Evans and made the ACC game. But ran Evans so much that he left early for the NFL which was a big mistake, but he said he was not a battering ram.

I could go on, but it just has not worked out.

Gus actually probably wouldn’t do bad there. People would be happy with averaging 9 wins a year and I think he could do that in the ACC

It seems like they've never really recovered from losing that game to Old Dominion in 2018. Josh Jackson got hurt in that game, missed the rest of the season, transferred for some reason, and they've kind of been stuck in a rut ever since.

Agree. Dude could restart his clock and would probably thrive in the acc. But I doubt he walks away from that sweet contract.

Add Barry Odom too! DC at Memphis and he just not a HC in the power of 5.

VT is a great job. Way better than SC. They are in the weak Coastal division. There is a legitimate path to a conference championship.

For one he can’t recruit

He’s trying to get Texas kids to come to VT while ignoring the riches of instate talent and what’s in the DC area

He’s failed miserably

Please let them make Beamer a Godfather offer. I won’t even be mad at them or him. They get to relive the glory days of the Beamer name and we can go get our own prodigal son in Chadwell.
