Why is everyone drinking this kool-aid?? There are black coordinators who currently coach in the SEC that would do a much better job than Turner Gill. How about someone hire Gill as a Coordinator, see how he performs, and then think about giving him the head coaching job after he proves himself. Or is he too good for a coordinator position. I'm sorry, winning a handful of games in Buffalo does not justify making him an SEC head coach. There is just too much money at stake in the SEC to feel obligated to hire someone due to race. Having to hear about this type of thing every year is ridiculous.

Buffalo was the worst team in 1A. They won their CCG this year, that's not just winning a handful of games. Winning your conference at Buffalo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> going 5-19 at Iowa State.

I say we start the push for ESPN to point out the fact that there are zero asian head coaches in major college football

That's why the NCAA needs to institute ping-pong as a major sport.

The only reason Buffalo was even in that title game was because the rest of the MAC East sucked arse this year. Did anyone else in the division have a record over .500? Any team can beat any other team now and then (see Giants vs Pats, ULL vs Bama, UAB vs LSU).

If it wasn't for the win in the MAC title game, Buffalo would be a 7-5 bowl team that had been shitty for a long time - the same as Vandy.

Why everyone thinks Gill should be moved into the upper echelon of coaches is beyond me. Yes, he has done great at Buffalo, but that means he is getting more out of second or third tier players than others have. Do you really see a Scouts top 50 player wanting to go to Buffalo if he has offers from USC, ND, Miami?

Let someone hire him and see how he does in a BCS league and then we can crown him the next Rockne or something like that.

There's a reason Chow has never been a head coach. He does exactly have "people skills" as one might put it

And ESPN's point would still be valid, since the ratio of are more black to white players in college football merits consideration of the coaching question.

I think this question:

quote:

should be revised to say:

quote:

Do you really see a Scouts top 50 player wanting to go to Auburn (with Gill as head coach) if he has offers from USC, ND, Miami?

And yes, I do.

How many kids really know who TG is? I can imagine a kid saying "Oh Buffalos Coach? The Bills? Oh, you mean the Bulls.... who the frick is that?" OOOOOR your saying he'd just get all these 4 and 5 stars to come check out Auburn... BECAUSE HE'S BLACK. That's a racist mindset.

PS. LEt's just say Ball State doesn't play it's worst game in a full calender year in the MACCG, TG's record would be 7-5. In the MAC? How is that a great record? It was generally a down couple of years in the MAC any frickin way. We are killing our coach for doing that in the SEC.

Winning at Buffalo is a big deal. They were the perinial laughing stock of NCAA football right there with Temple before Gill arrived. Between 93 and 99 they were Division II and had ONE winning season, in Division II. When he was hired in 2005 he led them to a 5-7 record which was their best record since 1999. (remember that this was a team that had only won 8 combined games over the previous five years). Three years later he wins the confrence championship.

It's comparable to someone going to Stanford this year and winning the PAC 10 in three years or someone going to Vandy and winning the SEC in three years.

Sorry if you don't find that impressive.

How do you know who he is? ESPN, message boards, etc. These kids watch and do the same thing that we all do. Trust me, they know who Turner Gill is and that he was looked at for the Nebraska and Auburn job.

Why does anybody bring race into it at all. He's a good coach and whoever hires him will hire a good coach. Plain and simple.

Interesting point. The question seems to be whether or not one is better prepared to be a head coach by being a head coach or by being a coordinator and / or assistant coach. It's sort of like the idea of one being better prepared for the presidency after being governor of a state, as opposed to Congressman. I guess it depends on the person, but is definitely worth consideration.

You're right he was looked at for both jobs and the schools decided they were better candidates for the jobs.... Pelini seems so far to be the right hire and Chizik could have the same type of success at AU next year and would be looked at as the right hire.

As some would have though there must be active KLAN running both schools because the black coach didn't get the job. SAD and PATHETIC at the same time.

Gill is a good coach and will get his shot, AU is a very high profile job that is going to demand winning right away and which would you rather:

A, Gill gets hired and is given 3 years, doesn't have it turned around, and loses to Bama all 3 years in recruiting and games... Fired and not given another shot for a long time.

B, Goes to an ISU or any other BCS conference school, builds a solid program, then moves up to the elite schools with a little more experience at a place that requires handling some pressure to win. He would be given more control and leeway to run the program the way he wants.

does anyone think that gill is being overhyped because of the color of his skin? I know a bunch of people will disagree, but if a white coach had one good season at buffalo, would there be an outcry for him to get a SEC head coaching job?

Gill will get his shot at a bigger school and I hope he has the same success.

I have read this exact statement a bizillion times when someone is supporting the TG hype. The exact statement. It's like everyone looks at it through the same eyes. ESPN. Buffalo went from Div2 to Div1 a few years before they hired
Gill. Think about that. That's a big jump. They had to spend a lot of money and probably went through a huge effort to find out how to win in the bigger league. I'm sure they upgraded everything about their program. So don't feed me the company line about Buffalos past failures. If the Buffalo situation is such an example of why Gill deserves such a gig, then why not such an outcry for someone like Randy Edsall, i'm sure the situations aren't that far off. Buffalo and UCONN both made the jump to Div1 at about the same time. UCONN has been ranked as high as 13th in the country.
