I agree that it was a horrible decision. There were candidates out there that were more qualified than TG or GC, to be quite honest. But, for some reason, the Auburn administration thinks they have their guy. None of us knows exactly what they were thinking, but only time will tell. For right now, I'm basking in the glory

Ok, so for all the Gill haters, please name coaches that fit ALL of the following criteria:
1) Are better than Gill.
2) Are at programs that are worse than Auburn.
3) Would coach for a school where they knew they would be treated similarly to Tuberville.
I can't name one coach better than Turner Gill that is in a position worse than Auburn. If you think that Butch Davis would want to leave UNC to go to Auburn you are on crystal meth.

this is what gets me. why would anyone want to go where they know they might get treated like Tubby got treated (not that Bama is easy on its coaches or anything)?
ironsides, it appears you may be a gill advocate. What is it that you like about him? I know he won the conference with Buffalo, but what is it about his coaching style that you find appealing?
Posted on 12/16/08 at 4:42 pm to bamaatlsu
gill's coaching abilities are surpassed only by his abilities to attract hot white women.

"And Tha U, Washington, WVU, and aTm didn't want to lose money or games either. All of them made fricking horrible decisions when it comes to coaching also"
And that opinion is based on the product you have seen on the field AFTER that coach started losing games at those schools NOT BEFORE OR WHEN THEY WERE HIRED.
As for you knowing anything about a coaching search or hiring process don't kid yourself or anyone else for that matter and say you do. That's why you're on a messgae board with the rest of us bitching about it and not on the selection committee at AU, LSU, Neb, or Buffalo for christ's sake.
The race comment was in general, not to you exactly, but seems to be the most common gripe of most people right now in regards to TG.
And those same people who booed when Chizik was announced were the ones crying when left for UT in 05 until Muschamp was hired. He had just been the DC for the UNDEFEATED AU team that everyone thought should have played for the NC in 04 and then led the defense for UT that WON the NC in 05.

i've never even watched a Buffalo game, to be quite honest. I hear all these so-called Turner Gill disciples (Charles Barkley comes to mind) saying how he is so great. But I never hear things like "his offense is so dynamic, it makes defenses prepare for so many things" or "his defense is so aggressive, he makes offenses get away from their strengths." Thats all I'm saying. I guarantee you Barkley doesnt know if Gill runs a 3-4 or a 4-3, etc. Obviously, I could be wrong, maybe Chuck knows his college football
But my point is for people to 'like him b/c he's black' is just as bad as disliking him b/c he's black.

Seriously, you think big time high school football players know enough about Turner Gill to spurn USC, Bama, LSU and the rest?
Kids wouldn't spurn USC, Bama or LSU for Gill at Buffalo. They might for Gill at AU or Tenn. I bet a lot of kids are spurning SU for Baffalo right now.

do you honestly think that if Gill were hired at Vandy instead of Bobby Johnson he'd have at least one SEC title by now?
No, but I'm saying the job he's done at buffalo would be comparable to that. Buffalo was the worst of the worst and considered the second to last school in NCAA Football ahead of Temple. To do a good job there is amazing and if Bobby Johnson would have won the SEC this year, I think that would be comparable to what Gill has done at Buffalo.
I'm not saying Gill is the greatest coach since Knute Rockne. I'm saying that I think he is a good coach with really good potential. I've already given you my reasons why.
As for AU hiring GC instead of Gill, I couldn't care less if it was because of race or wasn't. If Gill's a better coach then AU lost out, if he's not then they made a good hire. I really don't care.
What I don't understand is why people even bring race into the discussion and say people think he's a good coach or not a good coach because of his race. People think Brian Kelly is a good coach (as do I) but no one brings up his race. You either think he's a good coach or not.

I'm more enamored with his success at such a shitty school like buffalo. if you remember, buffalo used to be a team you could depend on never covering the huge amount of points that they were underdogs by. now, the culture is different, the team seems 20x's more disciplined, and it's just a complete 180 degree difference.
now if i were auburn, i would have gone after a half white, half black guy to make everyone happy.

I spent a few years in HS in buffalo. It's a shithole. People don't care about college ball, period. They don't even have a recruiting board, because nobody in their right mind would commit there, yet Gill has given that program a new energy.
They won 2 games in overtime, overcoming a 21-0 deficit against bowling green before blowing out #12 Ball State in the championship game.
What's not to love? Urban Meyer can come from that conference and be treated like a god but Gill can't even get a 2nd interview? That's horseshite IMO.
frick, what's Chizik done to get that job?
Posted on 12/16/08 at 5:04 pm to ironsides
Meyer went from that conference to UTAH, where he led them to an undefeated season and BCS bowl bid and victory, and then to UF where he has done pretty well.
So Meyer is the absolute wrong choice for comparison.
I've already said that from Buff he needs to go to a UCONN, Boise St, Utah, or any other school where there is pressure to win and see what he does there..... Then to the big boys he goes.

Are you really going to lump a BCS team in with mid major teams?
Posted on 12/16/08 at 5:18 pm to ironsides
good point but it's still UCONN, there not known for there massive football prowess until a year or so ago.
BTW Boise St and Utah are both stronger football schools then UCONN.

bullshite.
People called Willingham, Sherman, and Stewart busts before they ever fricking coached a game, and you know what? They were RIGHT!

Then got hired as a HC and won 5 games total, went on a 10 game losing streak and got a raise.
Being a good coordinator =/= being a good coach for reference Crowton is an example.
If you want an example of small school to big school and having success then look at Jim Tressel.

UM had two years at Bowling Green and two years at Utah. Not really the strong resume that a BCS school is looking for, but he was the hot name. Bowling Green wasn't a great program but Utah had a lot of talent left over from McBride. I'm actually more impressed with the turn around that Gill has made with a crappy team than Meyer taking a good job at Utah to an awesome job in Florida.
IMHO, that's like Gill taking a job at Boise State then taking over at Texas, not hard places to win.

"bullshite.

I seem to remember quite a few people thinking that Sherman and Stewart were great hires for thos schools at the time, maybe I was just watching a different ESPN, FOXsports, or CBSsports then you were. Your problem could be that believe tooooo much of what you read on message boards. As for Willingham I thought he would flop based off of his horrible record at ND not Washington. BTW Stewart was hired AFTER he coached a blowout victory in the bowl game.
You're right he didn't have a very good record at ISU but did you forget that TG went 7-17 in his first 2 years at Buff???? Whats to say that GC didn't have it turned around in his 3rd year and go a whopping 7-5???????????? It's actually sad that a 7-5 team can win a conference but it happened and good for Buff and TG.
I think where you are missing the point is that I'm not bashing TG but I'm not blessing him as the 2nd coming either. It's not like it should have just been a lock for him.

Because obviously Fox, CBC, and ESPN were right about those hires, huh?

A Buffalo that had done jackshit for the rest of their history. ISU was a .500 or better team for a few year before Chizik went there.

They may or may not have been right at the time but there was NO evidence to support it being a bad hire at the time it was made. Now AFTER the fact it's easy to say "see I told you it was bad from the start"
Point in the records being they were 2 games different in there first 2 years.... ISU plays in the Big-12 against Kansas St, Neb, and Missouri. Buff plays in the MAC, I would say it's a little harder to win in the Big-12 then it is in the MAC against the slober knockers of Temple, Army, and Western Mich.
ISU won 4 games in 06 before GC so it wasn't like they were in the thick of things before he got there.
You're still missing the point, I'm NOT saying the GC was the best hire and I'm NOT saying that TG was the worst hire.... But it certainly wasn't a lock and no brainer for AU to hire TG either. I personally fell like AU should have been able to draw a bigger name then either of them but that didn't work out like that.

I'm still not claiming that GC is the greatest coach in the country... Ty started out winning his first 8 at ND then lost more then he won at ND.... fricking ND where there there is endless money, every player in the country wants to go and has to be talked out of it, and you have the most TV and richest marketing contracts in the history of the sport for a single school at your disposal.
Yes Ty terrible at ND, Weis is moving into that category as well.
