re: This Circus Has Me Convinced that Aranda Is the Best Choice

What exactly is a circus? Do you expect a new coach to be named during the season?
The whole process is a circus. I’m not saying that in good or bad terms. It is what it is. Tons of speculation, everyone has an inside scoop, etc. I’m just saying the “circus” seems to gravitate to the flashy guys like Kiffin or Riley but in all likelihood a guy like Aranda on paper seems like a home run hire IMHO.

People are speculating because there are no leaks and the coaching search is being performed like it should be. LSU football hasn’t had a true coaching search since 2005.
Aranda doesn’t have the resume for Woodward and this job. He has no history of building and sustaining a program.

That seems like a pretty lazy approach if your Woodward then.

Lazy is settling for an unknown. He wants the most sure thing
If you bring in a Jimbo, Lincoln Riley or Dabo type and it doesn’t work out you can’t blame Woody because he got the best available. If you go for an unknown like Aranda or Napier and he can’t handle the big time then it all falls on Woody.

What? Lazy is not interviewing everyone and limiting to only “proven” coaches.

Aranda shite the bed a few times with the defense at LSU.

An old coach once told me, “There was only one guy who walked the earth who never screwed up. That guy doesn’t play on our team. The important thing is what do you do after you screw up to get better!”
The Rhys Plumlee game and the game after comes to mind. Plumlee embarrassed our defense but the next game his defense came out with their hair on fire.

I think the board would love to have Aranda. If he brings in the right O coordinator.
This isn't a concern of mine. Aranda isn't a egomaniac like the man LSU just fired. He is going to hire the best man for the job and won't care how much credit he gets.

Can we play devils advocate for a moment? Were his defenses really that good? I mean...I remember them being pretty average to good.

It's not a circus. We're swimming in the part of the lake where the current is strong; the real decision makers are in much calmer waters. I.e. "circus" is a matter of perspective. And maybe, from where we swim, intentional. So if the "turbulence" of your circus is the predicate for Aranda being the guy... you might want to reexamine that.
With the right staff, I'd love to have Aranda. For the record it is the staff FROM THE SAME SIDE OF BALL that I always fear. "Masterminds" tend to hire poorly for the same side of the ball that their experience resides in. Yeah, they are a mastermind and all but the players and position coaches need those good and qualified coordinators for playcalling and consistency game in and game out.
Ever notice that "masterminds" often, not always, struggle with consistency on their side of the ball once they become head coaches? Above is why.
- from a statistical standpoint, not really.
- from an adjustments standpoint, yeah- pretty damn good. The opponent rarely had any particular play(s) that worked all game, most of the time even for a half.
- from a W/L standpoint yeah- good. Only with hindsight, because I was quite critical of Aranda myself, he changed his defensive approach to fit how the game was going. And it produced some embarrassing statistics IN WINS. If we were having trouble getting in the endzone, his defense played differently than if we were racking up points. I don't know many coordinators who thing that way much less execute it with players. So that's quite special there.
- While statistically poor often- how about the eye test? Yes, good there. Players rarely looked confused or out of position. Yes Aranda got outmatched at times and yes players just got plain old beat sometimes. But they never seemed lost.

Based on statistics of total defense LSU finished under Aranda:
2016: 5
2017: 14
2018: 26
2019: 33
Looks like slow decline to me.

Aranda would be a meh hire no matter what anyone says. You have to see more from him before he gets a job like LSU. I don’t know why you people don’t get it. LSU has to hire a proven program builder, because make no mistake LSU has to be rebuilt bottom to top. He very well could be the next Nick Saban, just can’t take that chance.

There are almost no examples of those hires in all of college football- even among the elite programs.
Bowden was not when FSU hired him
Spurrier was not when Florida hired him
Stoops was not when OU hired him
Tressel was not when tOSU hired him
Saban was not when LSU hired him.
Carroll was not when USC hired him
Dabo was not when Clemson hired him

Lol ok so LSU shouldn’t hire a proven coach who we know can run a program because it worked out for 7 guys over a 45 year period lol….. i just don’t know where you people come from.

I would absolutely love to see Aranda get the job! He is exactly what LSU needs.
Posted on 10/31/21 at 2:55 pm to TexasHand
How many more you want?
Newsflash other than Saban, who are these “program builders” that we are after? Jimbo? Dabo?

This is why he wont get the job. You guys act like great O coordinators are plentiful.
This is a really naive take on the situation. Name a coach who won’t have to rely on someone else on one side or the other. I don’t think there are many head coaches out there that don’t need an elite coordinator on either offense or defense. So, if you got Riley per say…. He’d have to have an elite defensive coordinator to have success because he has no defensive expertise. Same goes for Jimbo….
The point you’re trying to make isn’t valid for basically any head coach in existence.
