may suggest he's going after a big fish DC that can have a say in some position coaches as an additional lure

Logically, a top candidate will have leverage and likely want some of his own guys

I don't see any position coaches getting hired on D before the DC, and I think it's reasonable to assume Jancek and Diaco could very well go back to being analysts.

Or maybe he was planning to replace one or two and decided after the bowl game to clean house.

It is probably a combination of

The defense was historically bad and they all had to go

He has a DC in mind who wants input in his staff

I don't know that I've seen a coach fire 4 coaches on one side of the ball that often, especially when the financial ramifications of that can be tough

Would seem to point to a big DC candidate that would insist on starting from scratch imo. We'll see

I mean, who on the defensive coaching staff did you want to keep? Jimmy Lindsey had a shite situation, but Steeples stinks and Cooks is worse. House is obvious. The two remaining are being retained.

That or we had assembled one of the worst staffs in CFB and they all needed to be fired and really none of them should have ever been employed at LSU other than as analyst.

I’m not sure how BK managed to hire such a bad staff.

Lindsey being the easiest to explain thanks to Cains late departure

This is, technically, his second defensive staff since hired….

Say it with me: Coordinators don't hire their own staffs.

Could they have a say? Sure. Make a suggestion? Of course.

But Kelly just got LSU to eat over $5 million to fix his mistakes. He's not delegating these hires.

Are they? Or are they just going back to being analysts like they once were because both are older coaches who had worked with Kelly in the past?

Nobody said he was delegating all asst hires, as we understand these positions are important for recruiting etc aside from just DC familiarity and comfort level

That said, Aranda hired Busch etc. It happens, especially if Kelly felt there were culture/chemistry issues that effected this defense like many reports. I could definitely see him allowing his new DC to have some influence. I agree it's not likley or reasonable for the new DC to have all the influence

This is the most concerning thing to me. As well as player assessments. I think our staff watched practice for a while through spring and fall and thought "we are pretty solid"

Something was amiss and has been for a while. I think Kelly will straighten it out, but it is a little eyebrow raising.

When we hired Cook and Steeples that was bad then we kept them.

Our D hires since BK came on board:
Dc: House- terrible miss
DL: Cain- great hire easily best on d. Lindsey- bad hire but timing was shite. Probably should have just promoted from within.
DB: Cook and Steeples horrendous in all aspects.

Going 1 for 5 in hiring on D was really bad

John Jancek and Bob Diaco didn't get fired.

They also were brought in as analysts and are older coaches who had been with Kelly in the past. It's reasonable to assume they could go back to being analysts

I could be wrong, but I don't think Kelly is going to demote them. Reassign is more likely. John Jancek is 55 and Bob Diaco is only 50 which is not "older" coaches considering Kelly brought Denbrock here when he was 57. Jancek and Diaco have both been DCs at the Power 5 level. I don't think BK elevates Jancek higher than he is now, but I wouldn't be surprised if he elevated Diaco. With that said, BK could have demoted or elevated either of them yesterday and he didn't. LSUsports.net removed the coaches that were fired and Jancek and Diaco are still there with their titles.
