It’s the pigmentation of his skin. That’s the allure for NFL owners.

Complete thread hijack here but did interviewing a mixed baw like Mike McDaniel make teams "Rooney Rule compliant?"

Yup

Jim Harbaugh should claim he is .04% Native American

Wow, we don't even hide the hipocrisy of this country any more, nevermind that Frazier and Shaw are capable, but the cheating nut case Harbaugh is the right skin tone for the job! And we say the USA isn't racist nor is there systemic racism.

As a former Harbaugh assistant I wonder if they interview him with the idea he could come on staff for him

You still learn about the guy and what happened at Stanford, it’s valuable intel if he’s a guy Harbaugh wants in a prominent staff position

All 3 black coaches made the playoffs this year in the NLF highlighted by Ryans turnaround of the Texans when his hire was extremely criticized initially. Add in the fact that a black coach completely turned the Raiders team around with the same personnel that his white predecessor had would imply that you guys could learn a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.

Might as well name it the Lovie Smith-Jim Caldwell Rule.

Not really. They got hired and were relatively successful head coaches. There’s some assistant coaches that are designated Rooney Rule interviewees. Guys that do it for certain teams every single time with no chance of getting the job. Should be named after one of them

Agreed, if you like the Coach interview him white brown black yellow red. It's an insult to all candidates. The Head Coach is so much more than X and O's and skin color isn't one of them.

I think the original intent was for good, but the rule is an insult to people.

Who criticized the Ryan hire? Maybe pointed out he had a lack of experience, but Ryan is well thought of.

I have been curious about how black is black enough in satisfying the Rooney rule?

Yet you still see whites waving that confederate flag.

Ryans will be a good coach long term. Pierce and Mayo will be fired within 3 years.

Like... how does this work? Do the Chargers slide him a check to come do the interview? He knows why he's there and he's not getting the job. If there's no compensation involved why waste his time? Free vacation?

If he wants to get a job as a head coach or assistant coach then he has to do interviews and play the game. If he doesn’t take a head coaching interview and screws over an owner that owner can then screw over him and prevent him from getting an assistant job.

I think Pierce is another Dan Campbell type. Mayo probably fails because it’ll be impossible to replace Bill B much like DeBoer won’t last in Bama following Saban.

Pierce has proven himself capable. He's a great motivator which is a big part of being a HC at any level. He just needs to hit on his staff hires.

The microscope will be on Mayo though. This is his first time leading a big group and he went straight to the top to follow in the wake of one of the NFL's all time great coaches. He could end up being great, but we won't know until he gets rolling.
