With Texas on the verge of firing Charlie Strong, and everyone assuming Herman would prefer UT for the money, program, location, recruiting, etc. One thing that i havent seen mentioned is the disparity in talent on the teams NOW. If Herman really wants a shot at the pros, he'd have a much better chance of winning big sooner at LSU, just based on the current rosters.

Recruiting rankings according to 247 Sports:
2013 LSU #6, UT #17
2014 LSU #2, UT #16
2015 LSU #6, UT #10
2016 LSU #3, UT #7

Regardless of who the next LSU coach is, the cupboard is pretty stacked with young talent.

The fear is real. Never seen so many LSU fans run to the defense of another Coach. And I like Coach Strong but anyone can see the signs.

According to this Longhorns Rivals beat writer, LSU might be safe with Herman.

UT arrogance knows no bounds. I'll laugh when they whiff again and end up hiring Larry Fedora

You're probably right, but im just trying to bring to light other aspects of the decision. If his ultimate goal is the pros, LSU would be a better launching pad. If he wants to be a career college guy at one school, then probably UT.

Also think he'd recruit better at LSU, because he'd already have the Texas ties, and then add the LA talent that wants to go to LSU anyway. He could cherry pick both states.

You and your liberal buddies are a bit overconfident. Let's remember that texas hasn't been relevant for 10 years and their talent level isn't on par with LSU. Unless you're married to herman, you don't know if a loaded team or a slightly more loaded checkbook means more to him. Who knows what his deciding factor will be, but LSU will be going all in. If that's not enough, so be it, but he will have quality options.

We keep doing this, but do any of us really know for sure that Herman is even the #1 candidate for the LSU job? I know, He's #1 for us, the fans, but that doesn't count for much.

Everyone supposedly in the know, say Jimbo is the guy. If this is indeed Alleva's search, i don't even want to think about how this will turn out.

Just curious. Who were the other candidates when UT hired Charlie Strong? Surely he wasn't the first choice?

He was the 7th choice. The other guys passed.

If Houston goes to the Big 12, I would think it unlikely for Herman to jump to another Big 1 school located in Texas. Which is basically all Texas is nowadays.

LSU fan ignorance toward Texas and UT is laughable...the prestige of UT makes LSU look like a JC...UT is a money making monster

hence why they were forced to hire Strong, who was not even close to their first option.

I understand the prestige of Texas. But for a HC, there are a lot more things to consider. And the OP has some valid points.

This has been and will continue to be their downfall. Also their administration is even more clueless than LSU's, letting the boosters run the program, and thinking UT can win just by being UT, and how it is such an honor for a coach to be at UT. Honestly i think if it comes down to LSU vs UT, LSU will go balls to the walls but UT will slow play it and hurt their chances, making it a closer race than it should be.

The correct move for UT's last hire was to back up the money truck to Nick Saban's house and offer 10 million/year and not take no for an answer, similar to the Dolphins. But they were more concerned about their image and didnt want it to look like anyone turned them down so only made a half hearted attempt (if even that).

Based off his response to USCe last year, I'm hoping it's the latter. I still don't know how much Texas would even throw at a guy like Herman, though. He's not a tried and true coach like Saban, but an up and coming commodity. Would they really throw 8-10 mil on him? That, I don't know.

They were relevant with McCoy and the 2009 NC game against Bama. So it hasn't been 10 yrs of irrelevance, but it started in 2010.

But the recruiting fell off under Mack and Strong is having to rebuild that. But being a defensive coach and seeing the UT defense get torched like it has been is not a good sign for him.

I'm scared to death that LSU could get into the 3 or 4 and out like Skip said in his radio interview. I think we will be OK because of the talent we have.

I think the important hires will be the OC and DC and staff. The HC is a CEO and should let the OC & DC do their thing and maybe help out in the areas of his expertise.

I'm hoping Strong can maintain his job and turn the season around so they don't try to get Herman. But I'm afraid that might not be the case.

I think talent wise for immediate success in the SEC and possible NC, LSU looks much more promising. But for Texas recruiting, playing in a weaker conference, Austin v. Baton Rouge, and money, UT looks more attractive.

So we need UT to turn it around this year. Even then, Herman maybe willing to stay at Houston, possibly have UH in the Big 12 and then may still get the UT job next year.

It's hard to know what is in a person's head and how he weights these items.

Personally the politics at Texas might keep him away. I thought Strong would be wildly successful at Texas. I think they'll fire him but I think they'll look for someone with more experience as a head coach. I'm not sure who that would be but someone with 5-6 years at a power 5 school would fit better there. Herman is basically the same as Strong was. I highly thought of Group of 5 coach. If Herman came out and did the same as Strong in 3 years then he's tarnished. LSU has a better chance of immediate success.

If Texas will keep Strong another 2 years I still think he gets it turned around.

UT should look at Brian Kelly, Butch Jones, Hugh Freeze, Jimbo, Larry Fedora, Chip Kelly and Herman. Herman is the biggest risk but also highest potential reward. Chip Kelly would be #1 on my list for them.

Meh, if Saban really wanted to be at Texas all it would have took was one phone call to Sexton. The money would be worked out. People make it sound like Texas didn't really try. Well, you don't have to. It takes one phone call. I'm pretty dam sure Nick knew they called.
Whats the difference between 10 mill and 8 and Bama would have matched the 10 mill. I know that for a stone cold fact. Plus, you don't have to rebuild at 65. Now had they offered 30 mill a year it might have made a difference because you'd have to be insane to turn that down. If UT goes the route of a 65 year old, you're back right here in at most 3 years. If Texas did that, well, its run worse than I thought. Even his age is being bantered around in Alabama now.
