Thoughts?

You think either would leave if offered? Oates has a 10m buyout and Musselman is at a basketball school and makes 4.5 a year.

Texas has a brand-new arena and ranked top 5, but it will never be a basketball school

Beard had more 25 mil left on his contract. He'll sue them and they'll probably settle on something but I doubt it's more than 10%. That gives them a lot of money to throw around immediately.

After the Leach fiasco at Tech, I don't see it. Even if there is a judgment, Texas won't pay.

While looking for Leach quotes, I found this Bleacher Report article on this very issue.

quote:

But as former Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach found out, such a lawsuit is exceptionally difficult or perhaps even virtually impossible to win in the state of Texas because of its sovereign immunity doctrine. As the University of Texas system itself explains, “The State of Texas is immune from liability and from suit with respect to most causes of action against it under the doctrine of sovereign immunity. This means that the State of Texas cannot be sued in its own courts without its legislature’s consent.”

The Texas Tort Claims Act provides waivers in certain limited circumstances like property damage, personal injury, or death, but none of them apply to Beard.

So when Leach fired a lawsuit against Texas Tech surrounding his own with-cause termination, the lawsuit was thrown out and a subsequent appeal to the Texas Supreme Court was denied when the court ruled that he could not sue the state without its permission.

Oates’ arrogant arse would fit in well there

Whatever. The point is they've proven they'll spend a lot for the job and they aren't going to be weighed down by paying a ton to the coach they just fired.

I could see Musselman, but not Oats. And the only reason is I could see Musselman wanting to live in a bigger city and out of the fishbowl of NW Arkansas...where he could become a victim of his own success as expectations continue to grow.

Oats has no reason to leave unless he would just really want to live in Austin. He's already shown he can build a program at Alabama capable of competing for championships. I'm sure Alabama would pay him well. Plus, as long as Alabama football is taking all of the attention he is in a relatively low stress/high reward job. Alabama fans aren't going to be overly demanding. They reserve that for football. Why go to Austin to compete in the same conference you're at the top of right now?

IMO, Calipari is the SEC coach to shoot for. It sounds like he and the rabid Kentucky following might be growing tired of one another.

I could see Oats maybe, but not Muss. Oats shouldn't stay at a non basketball school like Bama much longer in general if a better offer comes along whether that is Texas or another school.

basketball school

This term is overused. At any school that plays a semblance of big time college football, football is far more important in the eyes of the administration.

That’s why you see guys like Cal and Self who are at two of the biggest “basketball schools” piss themselves when the football program at their school has a modicum of success.

Kansas wouldn’t be in the Big XII still if basketball mattered that much to administrators. The real Big East would still exist too.

Why those two and not one from LSU? Is there something special about why LSU is better than Alabama and Arkansas? I can understand Arkansas would be easier to get pry away than LSU but Alabama?

Not really. Some schools invest serious money into basketball coaches and facilities. Others don't.

The only reason I see for Oates to leave Alabama for Texas is if he and/or his wife prefer big-city living to small-city. If they do, well, we can't match that. But otherwise you've got to consider Bama the superior job. We've proven we will pay top dollar for a good basketball coach. And we don't have the "we should be number one at everything because we're Texas" mentality. We have the "we should be number one at football because we're Alabama" mentality, and we're happy with being competitive at everything else. Much less pressure to win at roundball here.

If bama loses their coach they will wind up with that Bucky guy from Samford which would ultimately be a net positive for bama in the long run.

McMahon has done nowhere close to the other two mentioned in showcasing potential. He’s had a bad non conference schedule and two good Conference games. He’s going to have to show consistency and recruiting prowess before getting picked up by a program like Texas. I’m a McMahon fan and love his potential but it’s simply wayyyyy to early in his lsu career for people to be talking about moves up the coaching ranks

You honestly believe Alabama and Texas have the same allure as coaching landing spots? Not even close in my opinion. Austin > Tuscaloosa. Texas basketball recruits > Alabama recruits. Not just any school would have been able to pull Chris beard from tech regardless of it being his Alma matter.

Oh come on. No SEC basketball job is superior to Texas other than Kentucky.

What can he do at Texas that he can’t do at Bama? Bama can match pay and he’s proving he can bring in top 5-10 talent at Bama.
