So, Texas Fired Mack Brown With No Idea Who They Wanted?

I'm not buying it. They aren't trying to pave the way for someone? Why have we heard so little out of Austin except for a few names being floated? The recruiting class is going to fall apart and that will set them back another year if they really have no idea.
Why so quiet? Why nothing but a name here and there?
This is one of the strangest coaching transitions/searches for a big name program that I have seen in some time.
Can someone give me some insight as to why it is going down THIS way?

They knew exactly who they wanted.

They didn't "Fire" him, they let him resign...
But yeah, they fricked this all up. I don't know if Saban was legitimately in play, but if he was, they should have shitcanned Brown instead of letting it drag on like they did.

the guy they wanted told them maybe, but the guy they have has to GTFO. Guy they have said i deserve another year. Alumns say well maybe so, lets talk. Its decided that he does. The guy they want says, I ain't got time for this reups with current school. Guy they have says ok I'll leave as long as I get a high paying administrative job.

While they may lose some recruits or have some think about going else where I doubt it'll be that detrimental.

Number 1 guy said no or they had a top 5 and those coaches are happy where they are.

It happens all of the time. When you make a decision that it's time to move on...you almost always have to do it with the faith that you will execute a quality search and pick a quality guy.
I'm sure they had/have a short list with some indication of interest. But, to assume that they had/have a guy locked down is foolish, IMO.

Because there's only a few people who actually know anything, and those people rarely talk. The fact there is no news means Texas is actually doing their coaching search correctly.

I think this is a common theme that's just overblown.
Texas is going through a coaching search. They have set their sights very high. They are more than likely going to miss on the home run hires...but they will end up hiring a very good coach.

Mike Detillier said yesterday on a local sports talk that Texas has someone in mind and it will be completely out of left field. He said he wished he could share who...

This Texas AD...his first year at ASU fired something like 60 people in the Ath Dept...
so yeah, he fired away.
so yeah, he fired away.

This.
I think they had a plan in place that could work, but they just ham fisted the entire operation.

Big difference between knowing who you want and getting who you want.
Texas has suffered primarily by having a multi headed monster running the show that doesn't want the same things. No one is running the ship there. You have battles for power going everywhere from new AD to old AD to a President who is hanging by a thread to a BoR that is a battleground to boosters that are battling for power and control. In a lot of ways Texas would have been better off just committing to another year of Mack early on before the mania got out of hand and settling the power struggles over the next year.
One of the things that has changed the landscape at A&M is ever since the SEC move you have everyone rowing in the same direction and when someone has started to get out of line they were gone. There isn't one person pulling the strings but they do a really good job of having the same goals in mind and keeping the battles for power out of the media (for instance Loftin being forced out came out of nowhere to 99% of Ags).
This has not always been remotely the case. For instance when RC was fired and we hired Fran you had open warfare amongst different interest groups. The folks in power at A&M haven't been this united since Jackie was around and there is no way we could have made the SEC move or built the new stadium as big as it is going to be without that.
Someone needs to win the power struggle at Texas or else it won't matter who they hire, they won't fix their problems.

it's the most important thing a University can have, with regards to athletics. Powerful people with conflicting agendas is cancerous.
