He has done wonders in the transfer portal at msu. He built an impressive roster in very little time.
But all of this talk is useless. He is on the radar. He is not hired yet. Let the rest of the season play out.

Yes. Georgia is a battleground state. Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, and Ohio State recruit Georgia HEAVILY.
I’d also point out that Michigan State is currently 17th nationally in recruiting per 247. Their previous 5 years they averaged around 35th.

But by then we’ll definitely have a better idea how good he’s done with this team. He’s very well thought of and on the radar. Many coaches are. Don’t buy into this “He’s the top guy” garbage. Vitello was the top guy until he wasn’t. Sully was the top guy until he wasn’t. This is how things work with the media.
Everyone just needs to breathe and relax.

Tucker is going to sell himself in the coming weeks. Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn St to close out the season.
I guess Purdue is ranked now as well.
Whether he sells himself well is the question, but it's going to work itself out.

At the danger of repeating myself (in general, not to you Capt.)...
Don't care how many games he wins or loses as long as it isn't pitiful. Bowl game eligible is the mendoza line for context here.
- Are his teams in those games when he loses?
- how energetic and efficient are those practices?
- how are the position coaches to coordinators to HC responsibilities structured? Are they integrated so all on same page.
- How's their film study? Are they using both approaches in game planning and interpersonal development (also helps with recruiting)?
- Are there multiple players who step up to be "coaches on the field" (e.g. Devin White, Burrow)? Are they given the recognition, encouragement, and resources to do just that or are the viewed as "out of line"?
- Is there an overall integrated recruiting strategy where positions of need (and that position coach) gets more resources when needed? Is it flexible enough to move those resources around or is it "every coach for themselves"?
- Where is he recruiting from? Is he locked into a footprint and can't get traction outside that footprint (always a bad sign)?
I know you wanted to be sold on Mel, and I thought of the exact same scene and was coming to post something snarky (in my head anyway) about that, but ended up with neither.
However, in the answer to those questions (which neither have) lies your sales points.
So the starting point is, since he has been around a bit, enough anyway, and worked under Saban did he pick up on AND use some of Saban's processes? If it looks like he did, Saban did recommend him to MSU, then you can ask those questions presuming some answers.

Good write up Goon. I am going to be very interested to see how his teams look the next 5 games

1 year DB at LSU, a second year at Bama (after he was fired as Bears DC) as AHC/DB and was then promoted to DC with Kirby at UGA.

Also, isn't Georgia's defense really a product of Kirby? I think they have a solid defense regardless who is DC in title.
Certainly - and Kirby is a DB coach, too. Ask yourself this - why would Kirby take him to UGA with him, then?

3. I believe he has also been fired as DC in the NFL?
Yes. So have lots of folks. Todd Grantham, for example (whom Tucker replaced at Cleveland and, frankly, did a bang up job there.)
I'm not sold on him, either. I'm just selling as requested in the OP.

I can tell you that he came into Colorado and immediately got some guys...portal and high school, which is tough to do your first year just getting up and running. He coached them up, too. They were very competitive and every CU fan finished 2019 thinking "we finally have our guy"...they were heartbroken when he bolted for MSU.

Not at the top of my list, but I like him...
NFL experience.
Coached under Saban at LSU.
Coached under Saban at Bama as the Assistant head coach and defensive backs coach on the 2015 National Championship team.
In 2016 he left Bama with Kirby Smart and went to UGA as DC. Stayed for 3 years until he took the Colorado HC job.
He took the Mich State job after signing day and a month before the covid closures. The big 10 kinda fricked everyone's 2020 season.
For 2021, he rebuilt his team using the transfer portal. Weak opponents or not, they are winning games that they weren't winning before he got there.
There are better candidates available, but there are certainly worse options too.
On a side note, the 2015 bama staff was impressive... Lane Kiffin, Kirby Smart, Mario Cristobal, Billy Napier, Mel Tucker

What type of offense does his OC run?

I'm more curious what kind of D he runs

You see, that's the point, black coaches don't have that LUXURY.

one issue I have is that a lot of his DC experience is that as more of a Co-DC, except in Chicago and well...

Yeah I"m not a big Tucker guy. I was just trying to sell him as asked.
I've already said if we hire Tucker over Aranda I will M-E-L-T
