I don’t doubt it. That’s what was frustrating when the O pumpers would compare their five year records. Saban was on an astronomical trajectory. O was heading to the gutter. My point was just that he wasn’t perfect

being drug around by the AD at MSU

It was the president of MSU not the AD. The AD was a Republican and Saban is a Democrat. The president at MSU at the time had the crazy idea that college football was becoming too big and he didn't want to pay a college football coach a whole lot of money and have a lot of prominence.

Saban wasn’t even a choice if you want to get technical about it. He reached out to lsu via intermediary.

I guess the two board members who told me this know less about this than you do. Emmert got all the accolades. But it was Dean, Weems and Gill who got this deal done.

That is not accurate. Sexton and Mal Moore had been talking since October of 2006. Mal's nephew was one of the contractors for Saban's Lake Burton home. Saban put out the original feeler through Mal's nephew. A few idiot donors wanted Mal to offer Rich Rod. So he made a low ball offer to get them off of his arse knowing that West Virgina could match. The offer was $2 million per year while he was making $1.8 million at WVU. People not close to the situation don't know the real story.

Booty over Davey? He started Ro til he got hurt

Booty started the first four games, then Rohan started the Tennessee game. I think Rohan either got hurt or was just benched at Florida then next week, and Rohan didn’t play again until the 2nd half of the bowl game (vs Ga Tech in the Peach Bowl).

Funny that Mel Tucker is at the exact same program and has them in a similar position the year LSU hired Saban away. Just saying’

Saban’s replacement at Michigan State had the same success there that Saban did. And your point about Tucker is?

No they didn’t. All 3 coaches that were hired after Saban had losing records (Bobby Williams, Morris Watts and John Smith). After that MSU hired Mark Dantonio in 2007.

Next time just do a little research.

What you say is partially true, but Saban shot it down initially. He had always wanted to coach in the NFL and thought Miami could still be a shot. Moore was worried about his job in mid November because Shula was shitting the bed. There was an attempt at Rich Rod in late November because nothing else was happening and then Moore flew to Miami and showed up at Saban's house unannounced. Good move on Moore's part because the powers that be in Alabama would have accepted Rodriguez but they were not super excited about him. By late November early December Saban had enough of the NFL and the Miami GM. Moore found out about it and made his move.

Having a competent AD obviously makes a world of difference.

I remember the time LSU turned down Steve Spurrier- who wanted the job- for Mike Archer.

Agents have a lot of influence over these things and sexton was and is saban’s agent. We talked to several guys and ended up with Saban who had been known to be “difficult” and had a ton of additional requests for assistants and revamping office space etc. his entire staff was in the millions in additional cost.

We agreed and it was for the best

Depends on the source, pre internet days, etc but at least 2 or 3 people said no. No one was excited when he was hired, really knew who he was, etc.

1. It wasn’t pre internet
2. LSU wasn’t turned down by multiple people
3. Plenty of people knew who he was and were excited

He wasn’t expected to be available because it had always been assumed his next stop was the NFL. Emmert was talking to Sexton about someone else and once he found out Saban was in play he was the focus.
