Thats nice and all, but this is a free market, and there’s short supply of good coaches. No coach will accept that proposal if another school (Florida, Penn state) is offering 10million a year with no strings attached.

Then congrats to them for getting another Brian Kelly, a good coach who coasted on past victories all the way to the bank.

Incentive structure works until the coach is successful. The structure goes out the window when someone comes calling with a better offer, then you pretty much tear that original contract up and write a new one

If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. This relies far too heavily on schools not poaching coaches with guarantees not being made in an incentive based contract

Ok all these naysayers do the math.
Go 10-2 and make playoffs:
1M+5M (10x0.5)+ 5M=11M
Win/bye round 1 13M
Win round 2 15M
Win title Game 18M.

9-3 no playoffs 5.5M

2 year average 18+5.5=23.5/2=11.75

Well this is the big problem with this structure lol.

Mark Stoops will make $9M this year and he hasn't won more than 7 games since 2021.

So if a coach wins the NC-

$1 M Salary
$7 M per win @500K (14-2)
$5 M for playoff spot
$8 M for 4 playoff wins
$3 M for title

That's 24 million, and that's without going undefeated or reaching the SEC title game.

That is great and should be incentive based but those numbers are huge and adds up to more than $20 million in a year for a coach who wins a title.

And which coach you think will leave their current school for a contract like that?

I agree in principle but disagree with the actual numbers.

A title is worth more than 20mm especially when you aren't over paying on down years.

Precisely. This only works on someone who's not a hot commodity. And if they become a hot commodity while on that contract, you or someone else will give him more guaranteed at that point.

For example, you think Kiffen will leave ole miss making 9.5 mill a year plus incentives plus get 80% of the remaining contract if he’s fired? Why would I leave a school with guaranteed money for a school that’s incentive base? That would be stupid!

This is doable this year at this time especially at LSU. It won’t be for the Kiffins etc. but for a really good P4/NFL coordinator or G5 head coach it would be enticing.

Been saying for years coaches and players both pro and now college should be paid on incentives, would make for much better product

It has to get to this structure. Someone has to go first.

If a coach won't take the contract he is openly admitting he is not confident in his ability to win.

The issue is if you're the only school that tries it then you're the a-hole

I wish one big university would just try it (even if they were bluffing that it's all they would offer) and basically broadcast it to see if other places would hop on and say the same. Re-set market because one of the biggest coaching destinations can quit getting fricked by coaches and their slimeball agents. Wishful thinking, but one can dream.
