If there is no buyout then the length of years is irrelevant

The amount of years is meaningless unless there's a buyout attached.

But the 5-year contract would be honored should he fired before 5th year.

Right...a buyout refers to the amount owed should the coach leave on his own. Unless there's a provision that doesn't guarantee the 5 years in the contract, he's owed that total amount (in this case $15-$20M) unless fired with cause.

We didn't want to get into a bidding war for the top coaches on the market.

So we got into a bidding war with ourselves for our defensive line coach.

Miles was fired and owed a buyout

I highly doubt this contract is guaranteed

So if he doesn't have a buyout, we can fire him at any point and not pay him the remainder of the money he's owed?

Yes

The five years us for recruiting purposes

He can tell recruits I will be here for your entire career

This limits LSU's risk

O had little leverage

This sums up EXACTLY why Alleva needs to go ASAP.

LSU is vastly overpaying the HC of their biggest program. Hell, it's not that far fetched to think Jones and O would pay LSU to coach. That's how utterly stupid this is from a business sense

No, you can fire him at any time without paying a buyout but essentially he is employed by LSU for 5 years so you still have to pay him the remainder of the contract if he was fired early.
