Notre Dame has named defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman its next head football coach, the school announced Friday morning.
Freeman, 35, will be introduced on Monday during a 2 p.m. ET news conference and will coach the Irish in their upcoming bowl game.
Freeman was in his first season in charge of Notre Dame's defense. He replaces Brian Kelly, who left Notre Dame to become LSU's coach earlier this week.

I have a strong feeling this will not end well for them.
He may do great, but history proves otherwise.

Is the reason for the delay because the school president was at the Vatican and couldn’t formally sign off? That has to be the most Catholic reason ever

I don't think it will be a total disaster. Players love him so he may do well in recruiting

Agreed.
I think the move to name him permanent head coach is to assuage the Playoff committee so they can say "We have a head coach! Now you cant use that against us!"

Notre Dame has one of the worst track records for hiring coaches in the country.
They hired Gerry Faust, a high school coach, for frick's sake.
For a supposed Blue Blood, they are notoriously cheap.

Good job Notre Dame, you've made this hunchback very happy

Good for ND, Marcus is a great coach (as proven by our offer to make him the highest paid DC in the country) and I hope he does well there.
I hope Kelly does better here though

This is a really dumb hire if you list any reason outside of we are hoping to keep the classes together and we have a coach so the playoffs can't hold us out.

I mean he was HCIW right

Jeez I thought it was official already

That’s one hell of a first head coaching job

That was an enormous mistake.

I was wondering what the holdup was. It's about time.
Hopefully for him he gets to choose his own staff. Rees as OC and Elston as DC seems like it could be a disaster.

Players love him

Can’t wait for the ND melt for when he leaves for Ohio State one day

I disagree. They named him head coach b/c he's good at his job, he was going to get a head coaching job this cycle from someone, and he is their ace recruiter. Look at Oklahoma's class; ND didn't want to end up like that.

The good and the bad.
Good
Freeman gets a HC gig at a top tier P5 school very early in profession. Skipped about 8 years of dues payment, 3-4 OC and 4-5 HC at smaller school.
Bad
Freeman lacks background training for job.
Good
Notre Dame gets continuation in a possible NC year, and can probably hold onto 2 excellent recruiting years. Save some money.
Bad
Hired a pig in a poke. Could be fantastic. Could be disastrous. But, will not know for 3 ish years.
Reminds me of LSU with Arnsparger to Archer transition. We thought the world was our oyster, but this put LSU football into a hibernation period until Saban revitalized the program.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, so I’ll just sit back and be entertained as it plays out. But my opinion, should have initiated Raid 2 on Cincinnati.
