It all depends on the coaching staff he builds around him because he will absolutely kill on the recruiting trail.

A 35 year old who has never coached a game in his life as head coach has more potential than the coach who produced undefeated regular seasons at 3 out of his 4 last college football stops? LOL

You’re right, but...

Let’s say a Natty is 100%.
Kelly is currently at 95%, and Freeman is just starting and therefore is at 0%.

So Kelly’s potential is 5%, and Freeman’s is 100%. But Kelly is the better choice pig-boy.

I totally agree, but is he going to be allowed to do this?

Would he pick Rees for OC if he got to pick anyone?

Would he promote Elston to DC?

I really like Freeman's potential as HC, but would pair him with a steady hand like Grimes for OC and a more experienced DC who he can trust so he can focus more on HC duties rather than having to be DC from the HC position (I know he'll likely always be involved in the defense, but I think it would be best if he had someone he could trust with the day to day and calling the defense on Saturdays).

Agreed. It’s all about recruiting. He will recruit better than Kelly did at ND.

Regardless, that’s a lot of knowledge/experience you loose in Kelly. While this sort of looks like a movie we have seen before, this situation is a bit different. The OC is hired before the HC?!?!?

Maybe. But Kelly will reach his potential sooner than Freeman.

Very bad move. Couldn’t happen to a better bunch. Mediocrity dead ahead.

Totally a great move

Kelly had no success at Notre Dame prior to freeman coming on

Clearly Freeman is the reason Kelly won so many games

Worst case is he doesn’t win enough and the next guy takes over a stocked roster. I think it’s the right move, they are holding out I hope for the CFP this year plus all the recruits in this class that he will be able to hold on to.

Many felt the same about Orgeron. The truth is a great recruiter can get the guys to campus, but once on campus the players can't feel like they were just sold a bill of goods and the reality doesn't match the sales pitch.

No doubt Fickel turned them down. He must feel the same way BK felt. NC is more difficult at ND. He feels better about staying at UC or taking the OSU job if it comes open.

Worst case for any school is that the record start to fall off, administration waits too long to fire the coach, recruiting suffers for a few seasons, then it is too late.

This is more likely, too, as the administration is not going to be quick to pull the trigger on Freeman.
