Other than Verge being named the permanent AD, this was always the most obvious PLAN when you consider the persons involved. You aren't dealing with sports savvy administrators. You're dealing with wealthy egos and a meddlesome governor. People who (a) want to control everything, (b) have the egos to believe the can convince anyone to do anything, and (c) crave attention/adulation as much as success.
If you polled 100 fans with the questions of who was the best LSU football coach and the best LSU basketball coach of the last 25 years?, the majority of people would say Saban and Wade. Thus, in the minds of the people running this show the "search" is easy. Let's do what we need to do in order to get both and get anyone out of the way who is an impediment to making that happen.
The issue is neither of those guys have a ton of incentive to come to LSU right now. If/when that bears out the question become what do you do next. That's where the problem lies because you'll have an outclassed President. A (likely) outclassed AD. And a bunch of rich egos in-fighting over what to do with a weak administration powerless to control them.
It's bit like asking an 18 year old how do they plan to support themselves for life? The first answer is win the lottery and become a multi-millionaire. But after that option they have no plan.

That's cool and all but it is extremely well known that LSU is hiring Rousse as President already, and that he wants to bring his AD with him in some capacity.
