Not saying it won't have a clause in it that allows him to "step down" into the AD office, but they're doing everything they can to show solidarity and stability.
Mack isn't getting fired, so the length of his contract is irrelevant to him...it is just to make the situation look stable.

I will just say that the grand plan is for him to coach two more years and then move to the AD role, but that could change if there is no slam dunk hire available by then. Still, he won't survive past next year if he has another mediocre year.

10 years over the age of 65= lifetime retirement checks, Texas.

Not sure of the %, but 20%(2% a year) of $7 million a year for life would be sweet.

And you wonder why we call you delusional. Texas has 10x the talent of Bama, hence the reason we recruit it so heavily. Saban at Texas would be scary.

oh, 2 whole years, wow. The 2 years before that they were NC contenders

I don't know, but just like 97 when the picked between Brown and Barnett, there will be plenty of quality candidates. That we can't name them on a message board is irrelevant. We would not have named Nick Saban as coaching god in waiting circa 1999, Bob Stoops was never a HC before OU. The Pete Carroll hire was mocked. Who the frick ever heard of Urban Meyer in 2002, let alone thought he go to Florida after taking Utah to an undefeated season?

That has been the grand plan for a few years now.

Now this is delusional. The state of Texas may produce more talent than the state of Alabama (it is much larger) but it does not produce 10 times the talent and UT does not have more talent than UA, that's just factually wrong.

1. Doubt they will go after Saban initially. IMO, their target will be Petersen from Boise and they are the only school I think that can actually pull him away.

2. Id be surprised if Saban left. Alabama isnt far off from being just as good of a job. Also, who would want to go from winning big in the SEC to a shite conference? It wouldnt even be fun anymore.

3. I think Alabama can match any realistic offer that Texas would put out there.

This make absolutley no sense. Why would they be desperate? The program is in good shape. Yes, I know they've had bad years in a row but where in the BCS CG before that and have continued to recruit well.

They will have no problem finding a replacement for Mack, no need to over pay for a guy like Saban.

Correct answer.

Texas isn't losing money on the Longhorn Network. The money spent getting the network off the ground belongs solely to ESPN.

This!!!

The reason why Bama could not sniff the jock that UT wears in matching the money. ESPN wants the Longhorn Network to succeed. Read between the lines on that one.

I think he would be a good fit anywhere in college football. I would enjoy seeing him at a lower level SEC school (Vandy, Miss St, Ole Miss) and see if he could turn them around

Couple that with the fact that Texas has no state Income Tax.

Any guess what the TX property tax would be on a Saban Castle in Austin?

You ever been to Atlanta???

Not the same place it was 40 or 50 years ago. More northerners than locals in many neighborhoods.

This. There's no way in hell UT is going to give the impression of weakness under any circumstance. Mack getting a "promotion" to AD makes perfect sense if they extend the contract.

If you've heard UT is going to extend Saban an offer I'll take it FWIW, but the timing has to be a concern. If it truly is for post-2012, when Mack leaves, why stir the pot now? An offer is by no means a sure thing, even with Saban. For the same reason as above, I believe whoever UT hires it will be a very fast developing affair. Any amount of time that the program's future is presumably in the air, the longer UT's return to the top is delayed.

If it's for sooner rather than later, why wait until all recruiting is less than a month from being wrapped up?
