Don’t get too caught up in the position he holds directly before being hired. It’s not that uncommon. A lot of guys are hired to Coordinator positions, and even Head Coach, from position coach roles. The “pull” is the coach, not the position he coached previously.

It’s harder for us (fans) to understand because we don’t always know all the info used to make these decisions.

Sean Payton, for instance, was the QB coach for Dallas before becoming the Saints Head Coach and most would consider that a great hire. Admittedly, he was also Assistant HC in Dallas for two years but also four years removed from his only two years spent as an Offensive Coordinator. Everything else was position coaching.

There are several other examples more compelling than the Payton example but, the point is, front offices ID talent in people and when you can pull them, it’s a good hire. …plus it’s been made clear the guy has been wanted by several teams for several years now.

Not sure anyone is streaking through the Quad over the hire but, it’s a quality pull.

Meh. The chiefs are a poor defensive team. Feels like this was Kelly’s 5th or 6th choice

To step down from the pros is always a pull. Most guys want to go from positional coach to defensive coordinator then to head coach. This guy is ready to head up a defense full of guys ready to produce in the SEC West.so pulling a guy from the pros to the college level is a massive get.

House could understand what Kelly was saying.

Nielsen couldn't understand a single word of what O was saying.

LSU was 75-17 from the time Miles was hired in 2005 up until The Rematch with Alabama on 1/9/12.

No program had a higher winning percentage in that time period. LSU was recruiting better than we ever had, the staff was always filled with quality assistants, and the brand was respected across the country as an elite program where blue chip prospects could both win big in college and get the best preparation for the next step to the NFL.


Yes, things were never the same after that night as Saban and Alabama became the dynasty we all now know, and things truly fell apart after 2013 as Miles chased the NFLSU model and failed for a second cycle to address the broken QB situation which further drove his offensive philosophy into ruin, with change ultimately being needed.

But the revisionist history from bitter fans lumping Miles in the same category as O are absurd and no better than the current Notre Dame idiots that claim Kelly was a liability holding their program back and that they are better off now with a first time head coach.


We can both acknowledge Miles’ flaws and also respect and be thankful for how he managed the program for the vast majority of his tenure imo.

Recruiting is not equivalent to coaching you idiot.

I’ll be the first to say Ed is likely a better recruiter than BK. But he ain’t even in his wheelhouse when it comes to team management, strategic implementation, and game management.

Yes you can. A lot of terrible head coaches have won championships. A lot a hall of fame head coaches haven’t.

Binary thinking. There’s a wide chasm between a home run hire and a can’t miss hire.

Getting a guy who had a top 10 college defense playing an SEC schedule to leave an NFL gig to come back to college when he said no to at least two other SEC programs is impressive. Couple that with the fact that Kelly’s last three DC hires are currently P5 head coaches, and there’s legitimate and tangible reason for optimism. That’s not sunshine. Those are unvarnished facts.

Is House can’t miss? No. Absolutely not. Very few DCs would be, frankly. Is he a strong hire that was an impressive get for a new head coach with no SEC experience. Definitely. Are the odds of him working out here better than average? If you think they aren’t, I would love to hear why.

You are glossing over/ignoring some important details because you have a negative outlook on pretty much everything right now, for whatever reason. You are entitled to your subjective opinion, but don’t expect the rest of us to take it as objective fact.
