Ya Riley was scared of the SEC. In his defense he will run train in the PAC and will essentially be able to recreate OU with possibly even more talent, as instead of competing for TX kids he’ll have Cali all to himself. Also that offer USC made was pretty

I think the more I read and digest the hire, the more I like it. Realistically, if LSU pulls Riley, the likelihood of him sticking around 10 years is pretty damn slim. He’s young with big aspirations. When the NFL inevitably comes knocking, specifically a west coast team, I expect he’ll bolt USC.

Kelly on the other hand is looking to win championships at the college level. He may not make it to 10 years before retiring, but the chance he does is greater than with LR.

I’m not buying it that we didn’t have an offer on the table for riley

Riley tipped his hand on this by saying he wasn’t going to be our coach when asked about coaching vacancies, then less than 24 hours later was named HC at another school. Then less than 24 hours that, Kelly is named ours. Neither of those deals happened over night.

Justin Vincent also said Sunday a deal is in place and to expect an announcement that aligned with the actual timeline.

I don’t doubt we had interest in Riley, but Kelly seems to fit the mold of what Woodward was looking for all along. Riley was the hire to make for the fan’s sake, the biggest splash hire, Kelly is the best hire for the programs sake. If he was locked into one person, it had to be Kelly.

I had him ahead of Riley

I also had Aranda ahead of Riley

I would not have been mad about a Riley hire. I wanted Aranda, but I did not think Kelly was on the table

Lincoln Riley was never contacted or offered the LSU Head Coaching position. Scott Woodward only contacted 3 people thru agents. Only 1 of those 3 turned the job down. The other 2 were 100% in play up until Kelly got aggressive with wanting the job more. Both were made the same base offer and were working through adjustments.

People like you are ignorant. This board feeds off posters like TBL, VOL, etc. if you are so locked into their word being the gospel then you are the one setting yourself up for disappointment. So they got it wrong, who cares. It is exactly the reason I come here to get opinions on what might happen and if we can get some better insight then wonderful. It makes it fun and in the end we all hope it leads to success from our beloved Tigers. People on here that ridicule these guys have an a complex.

behind Riley

so many people say this and it makes zero sense.

Riley took over a program and really changed nothing. Stoops did all the same shite Riley did; score an arse load of points, forget to play defense, and choke on the big stage.

Kelly built several programs from the ground up and experienced sustained success that carried on even after he left. He adapted his approach to suit football's evolution, focused on being dominant on both sides of the ball, hired great assistants, has his own damned coaching tree, and can recruit lights out.

Yeah all of this. You can tell it’s a lack of critical thinking; people come here looking for the answer, rather than just information to use in drawing your own conclusions. It’s exactly like recruiting. People will call out these “insiders” if they are wrong, and completely dismiss the fact that we are trying to predict the actions of a kid.

Let’s wait and see how the assistant hires and recruiting goes in the next 12 days. There’s a lot of top in-state recruits out there.

He’s a great coach, but he’s got a really tall task ahead of him.

I did not know it was going to be Kelly. But based on logic and how Scott has operated, I had him as a very high candidate that Scott would approach. And felt like he had the best chance to say yes out of the playoff contenders. But I started thinking differently after the Riley hype. I felt like Riley might say yes.

Only two on your list were contacted. Third person that was contacted in regards to the position is not on this list.

That's a HUGE if. As one guy stated, he was unattainable. Just like Saban but more because it was Notre Dame than Brian Kelly.
Woodward saw through it. Scott knew Brian was frustrated with the inability to get over the CFP hump and win a NC.
Brian has the balls to leave his comfy deal at ND and go chase his dreams. Both guys have a vision and it aligns.
LSU is back bitches.

The age thing is a complete myth. It's the perfect hire. Regardless of titles he brings home he will build us into a stable power while we transition into the new conference. After his tenure is over he will be able to pass the peton off to another Woodward hire. We should have a powerhouse for 15-20 years based on tAlignment.

I think if the reports of Riley being butthurt over OU moving to the SEC came out sooner we wouldn’t have wanted Riley at all

It takes balls to accept $90 million guaranteed over 10 years?

This myth that ND couldn't get over the CFP hump because of talent needs to stop. They have recruited classes roughly on par with Clemson over the past decade. They have had top 5 classes in the past.

I hope the guy is successful. 3-17 v Top 10 is not great, but 16-11 against teams ranked 11 to 25 is what concerns me.

Over the past 5 years:

NDs average recruiting class was in the teens, and their average final ranking was around 7.

LSUs average recruiting class was around 7, and their average final ranking was around the mid teens (actually worse but I ranked them at 25 in the years that they were unranked).
