If we all knew Kelly was on the table…

I would have had him right behind Riley the whole time. But, that quickly would have shifted once we learned what a chickenshit Riley is. Incredible job by Woodward. We got the best guy for us out there. Deep down the haters know it too.

Honestly, earlier in the search, I thought Kelly had a better chance to say yes than Riley. But I knew Scott was going to at least approach him.

Mainly due to age.

He would have been in my 2nd tier based solely on age, only one I was giving an age exemption to was Saban. I thought we needed someone young and up and coming with good values like Napier or Aranda to rebuild the culture. But after watching some press footage of him I can see right away he's a no BS and take control type guy like a Saban. We are gonna be fine

I’ll agree with you. I wanted Riley and think he still has tons of upside. Dude is still only 37

I understand the age exemption for Saban, but Kelly is 10 years younger at least.

I'm saying I wanted someone in their 40s per say, Riley is close to 40 but his maturity level was proven by his immature departure from OU, glad now we don't have him..

That post is already bringing back crazy memories. I never wanna go back to that coaching search again

The thing is we really don't know who they were targeting first or last or in the middle. Woodward ran a tight lipped search and that's the way it should be. I just found it funny that everybody was pissed off at Woodward when Riley went to OU and apparently he was never even a target.

For Riley it was clearly about risk. He eventually wants to be a Hall of Fame coach just like Kelly will be one day. It’s less risk for Bk to come here, he’s in the last 10 years of his career and really doesn’t need to prove anything to anybody anymore. But, I think he does want to prove to himself that he can win a national championship. Which is obviously another big reason why he came here.

I hadn't thought about Kelly much because I thought he was unattainable. However, if you are the AD and you are trying to find a great coach that would re-establish a culture of excellence and not be dependent on coordinators on either side of the ball for success, it would be harder to find someone better than Kelly. His skill set as a coach appears to be very similar to Saban's. Kelly's an offense guy and Saban's a defense guy but the focus and successful execution on culture and process appear to be similar. They both can come off a little abrasive sometimes but it is because they have a vision and know how to execute on it. They both demand alignment with the vision and process and that is their way to success. I am very happy with the hire, probably more than if we had hired Riley.
I predict next year to be similar to either of Saban's or Arnsparger's, but it depends on what the team looks like, how much attrition we suffer during transition, etc.

In front of RIley. Has proved more than RIley at this point IMO.
Riley was the hot name because there werent many hot names available.

I’m not buying it that we didn’t have an offer on the table for riley

There would have been heated debate. I mean his age is older than optimum (although more than a decade younger than Saban).
There are no perfect coaching candidates. Almost everyone would have been thrilled with Saban but he has a very short window remaining

IMHO, I think Riley's age was a negative for me. He's young enough that, if he were to have success at LSU, he'd bolt for the NFL. I'll be interested to see what happens to him at USC. Lose and fall back into the pack. Win and move to the NFL. I just don't think he'll win and stay at USC for the long term.

Time will tell... but let's be real, nobody on here was pushing for a Brian Kelly hire.

Why in the hell did so many people want Riley? I blows my mind.
