How would LSU know this already unless they have someone they really want already lined up. What if LSU wins out.

When did the narrative on O change? For years he was known as a great, albeit shady (as in almost Trooper level shady), recruiter but not much of a defensive line coach. He got run out of the Saints because you actually have to, you know, coach to be on an NFL staff. His Ole Miss debacle is well-documented. His DL this year hasn't been anything spectacular; they got pushed around by Wisky and couldn't get off the field vs. Auburn.

While at USC during the Carroll years - prior to getting the Ole Miss job.
He actually does have a decent number of outstanding defensive linemen that he's developed into great college players (who then went on to have good success in the pros). RE: his success at LSU? I don't think he's in my top ten picks for LSU's next head coach, but I respect his love for the school, his ability to relate to college kids, and hope he would consider staying at LSU if he doesn't get the HC job.
LSU's defense is coming along this year. It is a new system and the DL talent did get thinner that it was 4 years ago, but there are some very good players there, and frankly there are some really good players on Wisconsin as well.

Obvious examples:
Jimbo
Richt
Stoops
Smart
Hiring a Herman, Fisher, Stoops, Patterson, Peterson would be a better hire (since those guys have already shown success at HC) but hiring a Arranda is a better hire than a Orgeron because Arranda has shown his coaching ability is special in a way that transforms a whole defense.
If you can't get a proven HC that you might want then you ought to look to one of the outstanding coordinators who might pose real difficulties for their opponents in terms of scheme or organization.
