The guy after Orgeron - Houston Nutt was only successful his first two years. When O's players and the foundation he had built were gone so was Nutt's success. He went 0-8 in the SEC his final year and was also fired.

Hugh Freeze said the week of the Ole Miss-LSU game that he thought OM fired O too early. I think the record of Houston Nutt the first two years show that there is probably some truth that his statement. I think Nutt's last two years remove most of any remaining doubt.

Are you saying the only reason LSU has been performing lights-out is because Coach O is paying them?

there was no foundation

the fact that Nutt was able to turn around an awful O team and have success those 2 years should be concerning for y'all

instead you all go full retard with the "Nutt won with O's players" line, all the while completely ignoring that O has literally only ever won anything with other players

Oh, so LSU players are winning games because of the draft and Houston is stinking up the field because there is no chance of any of them getting drafted.

I've seen some stupid arguments on this board and this one is right up there with the best of them.

Well, if he could do it the first two years with O's players, why couldn't he do it the two that lead up to his firing? Some guy arguing against O last week posted stats that showed Nutt actually recruited better than O at Ole Miss. But once O's players and foundation were gone, Nutt with better players all of a sudden couldn't coach himself out of a wet paper sack.

Do you mean other coach's players? If so, you may want to consider the fact that recruiting coordinator for three years before becoming coach after Kiffin was fired. He was coaching HIS players at USC.

So Nutt coached O's players better?

The whole point is that Houston Nutt proved to be a much better coach than O.

You are putting entirely too much emphasis on the title of "recruiting coordinator"

Calling those USC players O's players is a monumental stretch

Yes, his first two years with O's players. Nutt's last year the team went 2-10, 0-8 SEC. That doesn't seem to be a whole lot better than O.

Either that or Coach O is a whole hell of a lot better coach than Lane Kiffin. In this very thread there is discussion about Kiffin leaving for a head coaching job if he comes to LSU, but O can't get a job because he's not a good coach. Which is it?

you are out of your mind! LSU could have anywhere from 6-10 guys drafted, 5 or 6 in the first round.. Are you really saying that Houston has just as many players that will be drafted as LSU?? I didnt know Houston was up there putting tons of guys in the NFL like LSU is..

my god dude you need to log out, take some classes, read a book or something, THAT was quite possibly the dumbest thing ive ever read.. You are now ignored... go away...

I don't want Lane Kiffin as HC either.

Kiffin leaving for a small school HC job.

O could probably get a small school job, just like Kiffin.

Last I checked, LSU is south of I10, gump.

No, I am not saying that, but LSU didn't lose to SMU. Does SMU have more talent than Houston? Was SMU favored over Houston? Tom got his arse kicked by a team with a lot less talent than his. I'm not comparing LSU to Houston, I'm comparing Houston to Navy and SMU.

Navy's players know they aren't going to the NFL. How can they possibly be motivated enough to beat Tom Herman's team?

You know what Hugh Freeze wants right now?

For O to be the coach of LSU long term. That's a win for everyone else in the conference. Freeze wants no part of a Kelly/Fisher/Herman coach.

Well played Freeze. Well played.

ETA: Do you honestly want the opinion of coaches who play against us annually to mean something in this argument?

So why were they not worried about the draft with Les?

TigerFan55555, it starting to look like you have an agenda against coach O. The average idiot can see the difference in the team. If you don't like O just say it and be done. You are starting to come across pretty crappy by not giving O credit for what he is doing up to this point.

And regardless of your expert opinion IF he were to "win" out with this schedule then he will have earned the job. Nothing emotional about that, just facts. Nobody beats 3 top ten teams in 4 weeks (2 being in top 4) on pure emotion and rah rah speeches. That's good coaching. But everything is just speculation for now, let's see how the next 4 weeks unfold.

Again, so you're saying all it takes is 8 games to verifiable proof that O can run this program from top to bottom, for 5+ years? This is the argument.

quote:

No, this is emotional. Facts would be hiring someone who HAS proven they can run, sustain, and grow a program over multiple seasons. O has never done that.

That's a fact.

quote:

Nobody beats 3 top ten teams in 4 weeks (2 being in top 4) on pure emotion and rah rah speeches.

But they could do it be refining what someone else has done. This still isn't, "O's product" or O's system.

quote:

But everything is just speculation for now, let's see how the next 4 weeks unfold.

That's fair, but even in 4 weeks time, we still don't have comparable evidence. No matter what, O has not run a successful program for a long period of time.

Like many on this board you are making an assumption and simplifying the decision. It's more than 8 games.

-He would be 14-2 in his last 16 games, getting LSU to a major bowl at least
-He has verbalized his mistakes at Ole Piss
-He has changed his coaching style

This along with all his other attributes, yes he would have shown enough to possibly give him the opportunity. I couldn't say for sure unless I was in the interview to ask a lot more questions about his vision, philosophy, organizational plan, etc.

Others have done less to get an opportunity at a top program. But if you want to pick coaches a part, start listing your guys not named Saban, Meyer, or Harbaugh. There are flaws that can easily be found.

But all of the comments are about those 8 games, everyone seems to ignore everything else.

quote:

Decent point, but again, neither team was his team. And why do we forget about his all time record. That's called cherry picking.

quote:

-He has verbalized his mistakes at Ole Piss

So what? Let him prove himself somewhere else, not here. But please admit that this is certainly subjective and not objective. There's no fact here.

quote:

-He has changed his coaching style

And we have 0 proof what that style looks like over multiple seasons. And do you really think that the system currently in place is "O's system?" We don't know what O's system looks like yet.

quote:

I couldn't say for sure unless I was in the interview to ask a lot more questions about his vision, philosophy, organizational plan, etc.

So it takes 8 games and an interview? Or 16 games, neither of which were actually his teams, and an interview? Those are the requirements? And if I can cherry pick timelines and games, I can make any coach look good.

quote:

Others have done less to get an opportunity at a top program.

No. There's usually a reason. A dominating defense or offense for multiple seasons, evidence of growth over time, and usually young age mixed with potential, etc.

quote:

But if you want to pick coaches a part, start listing your guys not named Saban, Meyer, or Harbaugh. There are flaws that can easily be found.

It's simple. O is 55 years old. Has really never proven himself as a head coach over multiple seasons. Has never been hired as a head coach post Ole Miss. Has never been entertained by a program of significant stature. Is not currently courted by anyone else.

Yet, despite all of that, 8, or I'm sorry, 16 games and an interview is all it takes to prove he should lead this program?
