I was pretty convinced yesterday that Riley hosed us last minute, and Scott circled back and made Kelly a better offer than they may have discussed originally. I think I predicted way back in early October it would be Kelly. I didn’t harp on it because it never got traction, but from the very beginning he always seemed like the most “Woodward hire” available. So I bet Scott reached out to him very early. It’s just hard for me to believe he agreed to something back then and the Riley stuff was 100% false.

But them having the same agent does make that make more sense. Maybe because of his age, Scott initially offered/discussed less years to Kelly than the 10 he offered/discussed to Riley, and after Riley gave the hard “no,” Armstrong told Scott that Kelly would take the deal he offered Riley and Scott agreed? So, maybe the 12.5 per was never legit, it was always 10 for 95 + incentives to Riley then Kelly? Could Scott have used the agent to kind of keep both of them “on the line” until one was ready to be reeled in? I don’t mean “used” like “played,” I mean a more mutual keeping of all 3 parties (Scott, Kelly, and Riley) in the loop kind of thing.

I don’t know—these guys are certainly playing at a higher level game than I ever will—it’s just hard for me to believe Armstrong, Kelly, Riley, Scott, and USC’s AD were all in on this for so long and created the perfect smokescreen for 2 or 3 straight weeks and were able to keep it all quiet until Sunday. But maybe. Tip of the cap to everybody, no matter how it went down, though. Everybody came out big winners except Oklahoma, who got royally fricked. I wonder if we’ll ever know the full story/timeline.

That’s how the Riley rumor took off because insider People probably only knew the agent we were guessing and people assumed Riley because like most it was the sexiest name and no one thought Kelly would leave Notre Dame
