Read a story where Desmond implied Les to Michigan wasn’t quite a done deal and he couldn’t understand why no one on the show consulted him, the ultimate Michigan insider, before running with it.

Let’s not forget that Herbstreit lobbied for LSU to get into the BCS championship as a 2 loss team in 2007. He was a loud voice on the biggest platform in America. He probably swayed a lot of voters.
I don’t harbor any animosity for the guy. He’s good at what he does, and he generally calls it the way he sees it.

Saban was prepared to return to LSU before Herbstreit put that out there. He single handedly derailed a potential dynastic run at LSU.

Because the knew Herby couldn't keep his mouth shut.

Herbie is the best and most notable national voice that the sport has. There isn’t anyone better who carries as much influence as Herbie.

To be fair, most LSU fans in 2007 preferred Miles over Saban at the time because of memories of Saban’s conservatism and Miles was Lesticles (pre-neuter).
But, definitely crazy to think about how fortunes would have been different if Miles had left.

Because Alabama collapsed after the LSU loss and dropped its last four games of the season.
Much like LSU now, Bama needed a culture reset.

Even assuming the rumors of Saban wanting to return were bs LSU would have had a decent chance of prying Spurrier away from SC with a big payday. Would Spurrier have returned to form at LSU? We'll never know.

No they didn’t…this board had pure joy when they thought Les was going home.
shite when Saban played in TS against the saints the Katrina year people were throwing bouquets his way begging him to come back

Oh, man. Good call. I remember the Spurrier “rumors.” It seems utterly ridiculous now but Spurrier-or-Saban-to-LSU rumors weren’t as ridiculous then as Riley rumors were the past two months. Saban and Spurrier were seen as guys who “failed” as coaches in the NFL.

Idk that whole season I recall rooting against UM hoping they’d call him home

The Damn Strong Press Conference was arguably the highlight of the Miles era. I might have enjoyed that as much as his NC.

Very different memories then.
Easy to have revisionist history.
Miles won 11 games in 2005, 11 games in 2006, and 12 games in 2007.
At the time of the Herby report in 2007, LSU fans were rejoicing when Miles squashed the report.
Saban was 6-6 at Alabama and only sniffed Miles’ record at LSU once in 2003.
Have a great day

Les had a Michigan group that wanted him , but not the final number of votes needed. There is no doubt of a couple of things :
A1) Les to Michigan but for Moler supporters ceand blocked it
2) If Les went to Michigan, Nick was leaving Alabama after one year to return to LSU
Those are facts. Pretty well known that Nick and certain BOS had a verbal deal in place Friday night for him to return. If your were in Atlanta at the Marriott Marquis that night you knew as they held an emergency meeting there. By midnight the entire bar knew what was going on. At some point Saturday , Les found out that he didn’t have enough support needed at Michigan and leveraged it against LSU.

It’s not really revisionist history, from the get go the fan base never embraced Miles really until after the 07 championship. Not many were happy about the hire, the 06 loss to AU was unforgivable. That team was much better than the 07 team. So when the Miles to UM stuff started most felt he had fricked up 2 potential championship teams
Then he really lost all that goodwill the next year with the Mallaveto disaster

Because most of us understood the root of the problem.
But it was way more obvious to most laymen in 2015 than 2007 (with special emphasis on 2011).

My memory fails me...did he cry on camera about Mile's white privilege when he announced it?
