I think Miles offered it to him before Aranda but he only wants to be a head coach

This may be the funniest thing I've heard all day lol.

Miles bypassed the best DC in the game with a proven track record...for a guy thats never in his life called games as a DC.

Come on man

I don't think anyone actually knows that. Things were different in that era, no media, and he never held any title besides "assistant" until he became the head coach at Maryland. I'm not even sure if he was renowned at coaching either side of the ball, he probably did both.

True. I just don't want the LSU HC to fall in to that type of decision.

No it doesnt. It says he was handed the keys to two programs stocked full of blue chip athletes. The teams were/are supposed to be winning games. If we cant hold his record at Ole Miss against him, yall cant use his interim records with championship ready teams either.

Depends on if they let your beagle do the coaching. If they were hands off and let the beagle do his or her job then i would think your beagle would succeed. We all know that's all you need to do to be a great HC...sorry i couldn't resist the smart arse remark.

I don't think the real problem is with letting your OC/DC coach, I think it goes much deeper.

- Is he a motivator? check
- Can he recruit? check
- Is he innovative? don't know
- Is he humble enough to not be married to one style or typing of system? Again, don't know
- Is he going to constantly challenge the status quo so he is ahead of the curve and not behind? Not sure
- Can he identify player and coaching talent? This appears to be a check as well.
- Does he respond well in the face of extreme adversity? Not sure
- Is he a strategist (meaning can he lead in game planning?) hard to say, but it seems like he can

People think it is just so easy to look at the Wins and Losses to pick the next guy. This why there are so many failed coaching hires. There should be a metrics system for coaches like they have for players.... think Money Ball but for coaches, sounds out there but so did baseball metrics when they started it........ just sayin'

I did a bit of research into interim coaches... I considered the top 23 programs of the last 20 years. I found 9 cases of interim coaches that coached more than just a bowl game or the final game of the year.

There were two successes in that group: Phil Fulmer took over from Johnny Majors at Tennessee. Phil was initially the interim coach and went 4-0 in 1993. While it ended badly for Phil, no one can deny their success. The other is Dabo Swinney, who only went 4-2 prior to being named the head coach.

The only other coach to be hired full time was Clay Helton, who went 5-4 prior to being named the full time coach. The jury is still out on him.

The other 6?
Bill Oliver, 2-3 at Auburn in 1998, they hired Tuberville
Ed Orgeron, 3-0 so far
Luke Fickell, 6-7 at Ohio State, they hired Meyer
Tom Bradley, 1-3 at Penn State, they hired O'Brien
Ed Orgeron, 6-2 at USC, they hired Sarkisian
Larry Scott, 4-2 at Miami, they hired Richt

How does O not having any experience as a DC have anything to do with this?

It's not that he doesn't have experience. It's the postulation by others that he will let his Coordinators coach. If, in fact, he is not qualified - not inexperienced, but not qualified - then he cannot be an effective leader.

This is silly.

Do you realize how many head coaches were never coordinators before taking over a head coaching gig?

I'm not necessarily advocating for O to get the job, but just because he isn't an offensive or defensive "expert" doesn't make him unqualified for the position.

Dude. If you don't think that a guy like orgeron could coach any and all facets of the game you're crazy. Even the freaking graduate assistants know more about the OPPOSITE side of the ball they coach than the most knowledgable fan out there. Coach O or any D1 coach with his experience could coach any position on the field.

I see a HC needing 3 skills to be successful:

1. Hire and retain great assistants (in terms of scheme, development, recruiting)
2. RECRUIT -- be that Closer.
3. Oversee the management of the minutia of the program in necessary detail. Be a good CEO and think comprehensively. Being a good CEO also means you inspire from the top down, get the most out of your team.

t may be the worst thing. If your head coach is not actually qualified to at least be a coordinator on either side of the ball, then how can he be in charge of either coordinator?

Not true. Muschamp is an expert on defense, Richt is an expert on offense, Charlie Strong and expert on defense, Pelini expert on defense, Mullin and expert on offense (supposedly) Sumlin and expert on offense, Hugh Freeze expert on offense

Which one of these experts do you want?

To be fair he was at USC since 2010 as DL and recruiting coordinator. I think he deserves at least a little credit for USC being stocked full of blue chip athletes.

I thought maybe he had even more to do with that season's USC team but it had been 5 or 6 years since he had been assistant head coach, defensive line and recruiting coordinator under Pete Carrol.

Aranda is the assistant HC now with Orgeron. What the hell does an assistant head coach do?

Letting the coordinators do their job is a good thing. Yes the head coach needs to be able to be a coordinator and should be qualified to be a Cordinator. Coordinating is not his job. His job is to hire capable coordinators in line with his philosophy and the talent.
