Of course he could be a DC. I think Miles offered it to him before Aranda but he only wants to be a head coach. There's way more to being a head coach than technical football knowledge. I know lots of smart idiots. The main function of a head coach is managing and growing the program, surrounding yourself with good people and recruiting.

It's like some of you think all it takes to be a successful coach is to call plays on one side of the ball, and that Orgeron just sits on his arse all week.
I could give a flying frick if he's not an expert on one side of the ball. That's not what's truly important in a HC. That's like saying my mechanic is really great at identifying suspension issues, so I'm going to only take my truck to him for everything else. Never mind that time he left the brake lines unhooked and I crashed into a tree, cause he refused to listen to his shop boy who told him about it.
The structural changes Orgeron has made to this program are undeniable. Moffit is raving about it. The recruits are raving about it, and to have a top 5 class stay intact after firing the HC is completely unheard of. The assistants are saying it's like night and day. The insiders who spend time around the program have said he had a plan from the moment he was hired and implemented that plan immediately, down to the finest detail.
When the UF game was cancelled he put all his assistants on the road recruiting in less than four hours. He visited 10 schools, himself, in a single day. That takes planning and attention to detail, no matter how you slice it. His practice schedule immediately identified deficiencies in game week preparation, and in every measurable way it's paying off. He has already identified shortcomings in the ST phase of the game, sought outside help, and the results were spectacular. You think Miles, or hell even Jimbo, is picking up that phone and admitting he doesn't know best how to fix it even when the product on the field is suffering?
The guy has coached under Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, and has watched Lane Kiffin have his ups and downs at two major programs. The guy has seen what works and what doesn't on both sides of the ball. Right now, his offense and defense are playing like some of the best in the country, and none of us have any idea how much input he's had on that. When he took the job he said the offense would run his pro-style system, to the extent they could incorporate into the plays they already run.
Point being, how do we know Orgeron isn't just pretty knowledgeable at football in general rather than just being some ace at one side of the ball? Would you be more comfortable with Kiffin as HC? Gene Chizik? Context is everything. If Orgeron can identify good coordinators, run the program on a daily basis, and win games I don't give a shite if he just farts into the headset during the games.

My point was not to go after Dabo. My point was that he is the only coach I can think of that has had success at the same place after being named the interim, then earning the head coach job.
If there is another - just one other - I would love to know.

No one is saying that being a coordinator is a must, but when you get that chance to shine you can't fall flat on your face and still claim that you're a great coach. The evidence has to support that claim, and him taking over two very talented teams that he didn't build isn't enough.

Not gonna unpack all you said - which were good arguments for Coach O.
But here is the crux. What if he hires a dude to be the DC, but this dude, although doing the best job he knows how to do, is stumbling and falling short and it's not working for him. If your head coach, with a defensive background isn't qualified to be a coordinator, how does this situation get fixed?

Here's the thing. Coach O is doing everything he can to get the job. He knows all the stuff people caomplained about Miles and he's making sure he doesnt get lumped in with Miles so he's doing everything we have complained about for years.- Alienates former players, doesnt talk to media, closes practices to media, doesnt discuss injuries, doesnt have a passing game, doesnt throw to TE or RB, kicks the ball to the corner out of bounds, doesnt discipline players,talks like a yankee, overworks players in the season, runs a 1960s offense, takes his foot off the gas in the 2nd half, never blows out bad teams, doesnt let his coordinators coach
I hope we're not so happy to be rid of Miles, that we hire somebody, just because he isnt Miles.

Then he fires him and finds another one. Jimbo is being faced with this issue right now, after he fought to keep the guy from going to Auburn last year. This is an even bigger risk when your HC only really knows one side of the ball and the other is struggling, it's literally derailing Jimbo's season when is offense is doing well enough to win every game but the defense is pathetic.
Even in his three game stretch, O has at least shown he isn't afraid to hurt the feelings of a co-worker. It was Orgeron who fired Cameron, not Alleva.
