DeBoer is definitely a decent hire. Don't think he was necessarily the best hire possible, but he is as safe as it gets when considering unknowns like Schumann and Rees.

He's won everywhere he has been. I think he has something like 11 total losses in his coaching career, which is insane.

The question becomes can he do this on the biggest stage in the sport and can he recruit at the level Bama is accustomed to?

The behind the scenes stuff at Bama can be quite challenging to deal with. Tons of boosters and so on that want access and are giving constant pressure.

If Saban does hang around, I bet the majority of his time will be dealing with all this bullshite so DeBoer doesn't have to. He'll wrangle the boosters and allow DeBoer to focus as much on just coaching as he possibly can. At least until he's got a handle on it and has made the program his own.

If there's any "copium" being sucked down, I'm afraid it's more the non-Bama SEC fans. This is a really, really good hire.

He doesn't have the recruiting available in Washington to consistently be competitive at a high level. Teams like Oregon and Texas do, so it makes sense why their coaches wouldn't leave.

Washington can easily recruit better than 36th in the 247 composite. Which is where DeBoer ended up this year after two very successful seasons.

Pretty weak.

big time football and recruiting. DeBore has only been at this level for four years.
I don’t even consider Fresno state to be big time.

To replace Nick Saban is not exactly easy

Really? Because post portal/NIL Saban (you know, when he could no longer stock pile players and everyone else could start doing what he was always allowed to get away with) he really hasn’t been all that impressive.

I’m sure many will just go “but muh championships” and look no further into it than that and that’s fine, but an actual deep dive into his career shows that when he didn’t have the talent upper hand, he really wasn’t all that and a bag of skittles.

Saban brought a team with a pretty crappy QB to the CFP and lost to the eventual champion in overtime. As much as I hate Alabama and Saban that is impressive

Maybe not. That's why I qualified it with "IF Saban does hang around." If he has a daily presence, I think it will be more to help the new coach with the transition to all the outside noise, not to micromanage his daily practice schedule. If he was going to do that, he may as well still coach. But he may run off to the lake and/or tv booth and never be seen in Tuscaloosa again. I have no idea.

It's going to be so hilarious to see this epic collapse. This dude can't recruit and their defensive players are about to go bye bye,

They'll have some good offenses, but prepare for 8-4 and 9-3 seasons.

They grabbed a guy who caught lightning in a bottle, FOR TWO YEARS in the big leagues with a ton of 5th and 6th year seniors.

Grand slam would've been Lanning

so Lanning would be a grand slam, but not the guy that has a better record than Lanning (in the same division) over the last two years, finished both seasons ranked higher than Lanning, and is currently 3-0 vs Lanning?

DeBoer is a really good coach. I just do not know about that fit at Bama.

Fit means almost nothing. Gotta be able to recruit, develop, and build/maintain a staff wherever you end up.

He’s been an FBS head coach for four seasons. He’s not had to build/rebuild a roster over time. Hes not had to maintain a culture for the long haul. Leading over time is not the same as having two good years before you bail out. He’s not been anywhere at the FBS level more than two seasons. He could be great. He could also have two great years and then start to have diminished production wherein he’s canned after year five. The latter is the most predictable expectation.
