Perkins has improved a ton as a player and set himself up for a career in football beyond college. He played very well this year. He was always going to have to learn to drop back in coverage at his size. He's basically a box safety in the NFL like Jamal Adams pre-injuries.

This is all true. The role Perkins is in isn’t the issue. It’s that House isn’t creative enough to take full advantage of it. Aranda did a far better job mixing things up with Jacoby Stevens as a Box Safety. Imagine what he or another DC on that level could do with Perkins and his superior athleticism and instincts.

If Jordy is somehow right it would be a first for our media/insiders

The issue with that is House contract is up next year. If the defense doesn't look better Lsu will have another staff year anyway.

How awful was he with different talent last year?

The inability to adjust his scheme to the players is a coaching problem when it results in one of the worst defenses in the FBS. Period.

When a DC requires a certain number of super seniors and NFL-quality vets to run an average defense (because that’s all we were last season) and struggles to get talented younger players on the field because his scheme is overly-complex, then that DC doesn’t belong in college football.

wasn't it already mentioned in the last two weeks on the Tiger Rant that House might be retained?

Matt House and the whole defensive coaching staff are like an expensive formal dining room table cloth with a huge stain right smack in the center. No matter how nice it once was, it is no longer appropriate for use.

It simply has to go in the trash.

If BK tries to keep this defensive staff, everyone will think he's an idiot. He will lose at lot of good will and support.

People have assumed, just based on performance, that he would be fired. There has been no actual information that Kelly has any intention of firing him.

Fans just want their opinions validated in real time.

Obviously the defense has been horrible, but I'm also not at practice or in meetings, so perhaps there are reasons we are unaware of.

I think he should be fired, but I'm just an observer.

This is a good point. I think we have a rough season next year regardless of who our DC is (unless we reload at DL and DB in a way I don’t think is possible).

Retaining him one more year will be insufferable to watch, but we avoid paying his buyout and can more seamlessly move onto another DC. Plus it would be less polarizing for defensive commits in the ‘24 class.

If BK doesn’t fired House and the defense doesn’t improve, he will significantly weaken himself. He has to know the offense won’t be able to bail enough water for 9 or 10 wins next year if the defense is still an anchor. It would be a huge risk to stick with House.

If the players flat-out couldn’t run his scheme this year and he also couldn’t effectively adjust the scheme to produce better results than what we saw from the bye week on, then what are we even talking about? How is this supposed to improve? Repetition didn’t help this season. We are going to have several new and inexperienced players who will have to fill rolls next year. How is this situation supposed to improve?

House’s scheme is a huge part of this problem. It is not designed for the time and experience constraints of college football and he’s not a good enough teacher or creative enough to overcome that. It will never be consistently successful because of these issues.

I was a linebacker all the way through college. I find myself watching linebacker play almost exclusively. I have never seen poorer LB play and usage in my entire life. In fact, it started really bad and got worse throughout the season. Add to that the total misuse of a potential all-American guy like Perkins and you have sufficient reason for dismissal.

I thought that House was a linebacker guru? Perkins is incredible at a lot of things, but he is not a run-stuffer, nor is he a lockdown pass coverage linebacker. He is a cougar that tracks down his prey with speed, agility and stealth. In that, he is deadly. So what does House do? He neutralizes Perkins in an attempt to make him something he is not.

This defense was embarrasing, dump it now and let's move on.

You’ll just run into the same problem with ‘25 recruiting class then, which is supposed to be a great class

Never a good idea to kick the can down the road. If it’s inevitable that House will be fired then you do it now. Letting this drag out will cause more harm to the program than good. Buy him out and be done with it.

I mean what did you want Kelly to say regarding House in the season? “Our DC sucks and will be fired upon year’s end”?

House is the problem with scheme. Scheme is crap.

Regardless of what you think of House, the scheme used this year wasn't House's preferred scheme.

Right or wrong, LSU decided to fall back to a uber conservative, soft coverage scheme because it was so limited in the defensive backfield. This was done after the debacle at Ole Miss.

I suspect that this was a Kelly decision made in conjunction with House given the absolute disaster they were looking at.

And, you never know what conversations were had between House and Kelly. House could have been sounding the alarm with Kelly for a while.

We were limited with our front 7 too. The whole defense was garbage
