This is apples to oranges compared to hiring some washed up FCS Coach that nobody was calling like Bo. Mason will be a P5 DC this year. Period. Bo was wasting away at the FCS level.

This is the exact same reaction we would have had last year if we would have hired Barry Odom. Which turned out to be a solid hire for Arkansas.

This is a guy who has been coaching in the best conference as a head coach. Very similar to Odom.

Again. Not my first choice but very far from a washed up retread. He’s two months removed from a HC job in the SEC. Not coming out of hiding after a decade at the FCS level.

The question is: how much of the Vandy defense was talent and how much Mason?

I don’t hate the idea but would probably prefer someone coaching a defense directly.

If we hire mason O is gone next year. I’m sorry but he hasn’t coached a D in forever. The offense game has changed a lot since he was last dc.

Also I have a hard time seeing our guys take him seriously after the bullshite pr stunt he pulled.

He was a Hc at Vandy. 6-6 and a bowl game is a great year there. I wouldn't be mad if he is the DC. He is alot more qualified than the rants #1 choice Corey Raymond. Im more concerned about the OC

My issue would be that we've made a conscious effort to move from 3-4 to a 4-3.

Mason has always run a 3-4. So we lost Apu Ika for no reason and we've been recruiting a 4-3.

O Likes 4 down lineman because they get home more.

One thing I remember when they did have a good defense under Mason like 5 or so years ago is their players could actually tackle and they gang tackled. It seems like tackling is a lost art these days.

I would rather gamble on Raymond than mason.

The guy lost control of his vandy team and then decided to make fools of all of them.

Even if he hadn’t done that, the last time he was a dc was forever ago with how the offense in college football and the sec has changed.

Yep. Impossible to know. However it’s literally impossible for it to be worse than Bo.

He isn’t my first choice, but I thought everyone wanted Derek mason as their DC the second he was inevitably fired from Vanderbilt? He knows defense, and I bet he’s an excellent recruiter

Personally I think people are too triggered over the female kicker gimmick.

That makes you an idiot. Corey Raymond will not be a DC at a Power V school.

Offensive have changed since he last was dc! What do you think he has been doing shutting his eyes for half the game?

People are way too triggered over everything.

I thought it was stupid as hell but I’m also not going to angrily post about it on a message board.

I’m with this hire. I’ve always liked Mason.

He last was dc in 2012-13. Thing of how the offenses have changed since then. That is the biggest strike against him

Strike 2 is the kicker bullshite. He wasn’t even trying to be competitive at that point.

Decided to look at SEC recruiting rankings. Basically last in recruiting ever year for the conference. How do his defenses look if he gets top tier talent ever year?

2019 - 14th
2018 - 12th
2017 - 14th
2016 - 14th
2015 - 14th
2014 - 14th

He was the Defensive Coordinator at Vandy for 3-4 years of his time there. Last time was the 2017 season I believe.

Well his vandy d wasn’t stopping anyone so maybe he was. He wasn’t calling plays. The game moved past Bo and it’s probably past mason

Stop. Nobody is melting. The fan base has seen this play before and is looking for something different.

As far as retread comments about ex head coaches.. Muschamp is a FAR better defensive coach than both Odom and Mason.. Those guys aren’t in his league... But LSU shouldn’t want Muschamp either.

Time for new blood. Go get Freeman!
