It’s extremely unlikely Kelly would fire them and pay their buyouts to then rehire them 2 yrs later including paying Bakers Mizzou buyout and now giving him a raise in salary and responsibility.

Not rational

One isn’t like the other.

Baker was a linebacker coach that had failed his first ride as DC. We also happened to be brining in a DC that coaches the same position so pretty hard to keep him. He also would be coming here for a different position than he had.

Raymond we did let walk and we would be brining back in the same role.

Yes it is rational. He wanted to bring in guys he’s worked with prior to ND and who were with him at ND. It didn’t work.. so he will change course. Pretty rational

I don’t see it

You’re tying your success to people you’ve fired and rehired in a two year span

Maybe Raymond gets his job back but no way he rehires Baker now to run the show on defense imo

Not to mention rationality is no longer relevant in this sport. Bobby Patrino is offensive coordinator at Arkansas for Pete's sake.

Fired and not retained are two different things

Les hired Peveto back after firing him

I think the difference is they were hired in lesser roles after time passed

Upgrading Baker just two yrs after you canned him seems like a bigger leap

Semantics I suppose

Coach could have wanted you but didn’t and sent you packing

Baker & Raymond

The biggest difference between these two is that Baker went out and proved himself after leaving lsu. He has created more value for himself after leaving.

Raymond has not done anything of note since leaving. I could see Kelly re-evaluate Baker and bring him back but not Raymond.

Honestly though, with as much smoke that has been around Baker the past two days it makes me think it's definitely not him.

You get that Baker was not our DC correct? You get that Baker did a great job that year, was liked by his players, and turned Damone Clark from not good into a NFL starter? He wasn't retained because his DC choice happened to coach NFL linebackers. If Denbrock coached OL instead of TE Davis would have gone as well.

Fast forward two years and Baker has improved a defense more than any DC in college football. As bonus he recruits well and has ties to this area. There is not a more slam dunk option than this guy.

Now Raymond I think would be Wilson in Kelly's ear because he has not done a good job in about six years.

Corey took a job, he was not fired. He probably would have been.

ALso, Its not uncommon to clean house when the HC had a bad culture.

Did he? I agree he's created more value and Mizzou has given it to him. But it's not like his defenses have been stellar. They've ranked well nationally the last two years but not overwhelmingly...for context, LSU was not far behind Mizzou in 2022 by Total D

This makes sense but I still contend that it's unlikely for Kelly to do a 180 on Baker in 2 years. We'll see

Has Baker recruited well at Mizzou? I hear the Baker recruiting narrative but he was always at a small school until Miami and they wanted him gone which is why he came to LSU for a lesser job. I never thought of him as a dynamo in recruiting. Definitely solid to go into Florida and get Tolan but it's not like he was racking up 5-stars one after another

Brian Kelly once demoted Mike Denbrock from Offensive coordinator only to hire him later at LSU for that same role. Timing is everything. Kelly came to LSU when the program had the worst culture it had probably had in decades. He barely retained anyone from the entire program. He didn't fire Baker and Raymond b/c they aren't good coaches. He let them go b/c he needed a fresh start. You can easily bring those guys back now b/c the culture and program is in a different state than it was 2+ years ago.

I don't know what your metric is for proving himself but I would say moving their total defense up from like 115 the year before he took over to the 20s this year is proving himself as a DC.

From #113 in total defense in 2021 to #56 in 2022 and #25 in 2023. Granted total defense isn't the end all to grading a DC but he's dramatically improved Missouris defense since he took over. Can't say the same for Raymond when he left here.

I also thinking letting Raymond walk was a good thing. I don’t think all the rumors of him getting lazy are accurate, but there was probably some truth there.

You also called his bluff and he comes back later and end up preventing a raise every year because he threatens to leave.

People also don’t bring up how much of a shite show CB room became on his watch. Vincent opting out, Stingley injury drama, Eli Ricks circus show, Mcglothern suspended etc etc. Guys weren’t exactly playing hard for him…

So don’t make the best possible hire because you didn’t make the best hire in the past? Hmm, no thanks. Glad you’re not in charge.
