A relative unknown, but young with solid pedigree > a known, old retread failure

I don't know how this will work out, but at least we aren't going with someone that has sucked as a DC before which we actually looked at apparently.
This guy has Louisiana ties, called a good defense in D2, seems very sharp in interviews, and has coached under some great defensive minds.
He's also young and ambitious, which I think we all wanted.
Let's give him some great position coaches to add on top of Raymond and let's just root for the guy to succeed.

It’s risky given his experience but the guy checks a lot of boxes for what you want out of a dc.

I’ll never root against him. I hope he’s the best damn DC of all time but it’s a very strange hire. Very interested to watch his interview this week

Will definitely root for the guy to succeed but not sure about "solid pedigree." Nothing about his resume over the past ten years jumps out as impressive. Seems like he sort of skipped a step in some way to get to one of the best DC jobs in the country.
ETA: Also not sure where people are getting the impressive interview thing. He doesn't come across like Peetz in terms of enthusiasm, for example.

Pedigree to me means he has worked under top defensive minds.
Dave Aranda brought him to multiple stops and he's been under Mike Zimmer, a very solid NFL DC, for a while now.
He also did call a great defense in D2, that's not nothing

Seems more like Aranda. Smart, calm, well-thought out responses.

Look anytime you can get a guy who spent his last four seasons as an irrelevant fill out the coaching staff position coach on bottom ten nfl defenses....you gotta do it.

So what you're saying is LSU doesn't have the ability to hire a currently successful college DC.
LSU can only go for failures or take a chance on people who have proven nothing.

I’m going to give O the benefit of the doubt. I want him to succeed. I really do. Just some of the things he does just don’t make sense to me. I hope he’s knocked it out of the park, but if he didn’t, he’s basically handed himself the pink slip.

I agree with this, this method is better than a retread.

What I would like to know is how did O come to reach out to him for the job? How did he become a candidate and under whose recommendation if there was one. And what does Zimmer think of him? I would assume Zimmer really thinks he is a good coach because Zimmer has been a very good defensive coach over the years and I can't imagine he would have someone on his staff that he didn't think was a very good coach.

Zimmer glows about him in interviews and Aranda made a point to hire him at multiple stops.

I think this is a Mike Zimmer school hire. He has always been a top 5 DC in the NFL and he runs a 4-3.
That is what O says he wants. Wouldn’t be surprised if one of either the LB or DL coaches are from that same tree

Was with Dave 1 year and Dave didn't take him anywhere, and didn't call him when he got the job at Baylor either.

So have a lot of people who don't know how to be a DC

It's only marginally better than saying "He was an elite DC at the high school level".

Look, there’s no sugar coating his resume. It’s not good.
But that doesn’t mean he can’t be a good DC. Sometimes there are things out of a guys control

Aranda did the same with Bill Busch. That doesn't mean he has any business being the DC of a Top 15 college program. By all accounts he's a good DB coach but that's where it ends.
