Minor Leaguer Breaks Up No-Hitter In Ninth Inning With A Bunt, Then Benches Clear
© Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

This Double -A minor leaguer pulled a pretty jerk move when he laid done a bunt during the opposing team's no-hitter. Per The Spun...
quote:

Tuesday night, a game at the Double-A level reignited the debate again. The Hartford Yard Goats, leading 3-0 against the Trenton Thunder, had a no-hitter going between three pitchers and one out in the ninth inning.

Thunder batter Matt Lipka decided to try a bunt and laid it down perfectly. He posted the first hit of the game for his team.

Predictably, the Yard Goats were not thrilled with his decision. The benches cleared, but it doesn’t look like anyone threw any haymakers.

Baseball is so dumb. Stop him from reaching 1st if you want the no hitter. Cry babies

"a no-hitter going between three pitchers" Stopped reading here. It's a non issue if there's more than one pitcher.

Its also minor league baseball where records are bull shite anyway.

I can see both sides of this argument. I think my judgement on whether he was a douchebag or just competitive would come down to how often he bunt singles. And since I really don't care I guess I will never know...

I mean, it looks like the dude has some pretty serious wheels. So why not?

Damn, if this article title doesn't describe "participation trophy" generation best, I don't know what does. Should the batter just have let him strike him out? Jeez. What a bunch of losers.

What are you talking about? This is a remnant of "old baseball". But yeah blame a hundred years of dumb baseball tradition on the younger generation that inherited it.

A remnant of old baseball is folding over and giving a no-hitter (even though this wasn't a true one) to a pitcher? Sounds like a pussy sport to begin with then.

It's supposedly one of those unwritten rules of baseball. No bunts to break up a no-hitter. If they're playing a series, that guy is definitely getting dotted next time he's up to bat.

So not only does he put his team in a chance to win...he gets a free pass next game. Win win.

No bunts to break up a no hitter for ONE pitcher. This was between three pitchers, so what you can to win.

If it was somebody that never tries to bunt for a hit I might agree. This guy clearly has that in his arsenal.

runner is out for running inside the baseline!

WTF...I mean, it was 3-0 with 1 out. Get a man on base, and who knows what can happen from there. So teams are supposed to stop trying to win if the opposing pitcher has a no-hitter going? There's a reason no-hitters are special, and it kind of diminishes the accomplishment if the other team is just expected to roll over in the 9th inning.

@tampatiger22 frick that man. we know baseball but competition superseeds unwritten rules. If I was at bat, I'd try to spoil the no hitter. frick the other team. you cant convince any real competitor otherwise

You play to win the game.

He should be out for running out the baseline.

He is clearly running way inside the baseline to prevent an accurate throw to first.

Did not know you were allowed to run two feet inside the baseline.

It was a 3-0 game. No one is entitled to a no-hitter. Don't allow a bunt hit, pitcher.

"No one is entitled to a no-hitter." on top of that it was 3 different pitchers EL OH EL

Are we just going to ignore the fact that minor league teams have awesome names like "yard goats"?

Bunt singles are clearly part of that guy’s skill set. If it was a slow arse catcher just trying to get a cheap hit to break up the no-no, not win the game, then I might be upset.
