LSU star Angel Reese had her 'Bayou Barbie' trademark filing denied in late 2023 and has decided to abandon the attempt by not submitting arguments supporting her case. Per On3:
quote:

Reese’s camp has now decided to abandon the attempt, missing the 90-day deadline to submit arguments supporting her case. Because of the decision not to file arguments, the case has been deemed “dead.”

In the filing from the USPTO denying the trademark in November, the office cited a likelihood of confusion as a reason to deny the filing. The toy company Mattel owns the trademark to Barbie.

“We discussed internally and determined that it was in Angel’s best interest to not unnecessarily instigate Mattel,” said IP and NIL attorney Darren Heitner, who filed the trademark paperwork on Reese’s behalf. “While initially it seemed worthy to obtain the registration, Angel has pivoted away from selling Bayou Barbie merchandise. As such, the appropriate business decision was made to simply let the application abandon.”

Certainly as original as Reese is she can find a moniker even more original.

Seems like a Great missed Marketing opportunity for both Angel and Mattel!! Apparently, you guys (or Mattel) have seen the lines of little girls, who wait for hours before and after the game, just to get to see and talk with Bayou Barbie!?! She is, definitely, a role model for many!

My dad represented Donna Douglas, Ellie May Clampett, in a laws suit against Mattel for the Ellie May Barbie that she didn't get any royalties for. They settled out of court.

her TM attorney should've told her from the beginning that the odds of getting this through the Trademark Office were nil. Waste of money - but the attorney got his fee.

Prop cost her $75,000+ in NIL for not having the foresight to realize you can't trademark "Barbie" which anyone with middle school education should realize.

Oh no...her lawyer said he could file for her at a discount rate because he cares for her so...for only $50k! Wow, only 50K?

You or I could go on the USPTO website and file it for cost...prolly $500.

Why not Baltimore Barbie?

Bc Mattel owns the trademark “Barbie”. It was not because the trademark would have involved Bayou but Barbie.

I wonder why her camp did this in the first place. The move would be to get an NIL deal with Mattel and let them make a “Bayou Barbie” with her likeness…..jersey number, face, etc. Both would have been happy making bank.

Well, we are all here discussing it. I would say her camp did a great job in keeping her in the public eye.

Good. She is not from the bayou and is certainly no Barbie.

Why not try and team up with Mattel and create "Bayou Barbie" merchandise with them? Sounds like a good NIL deal.

Because nobody outside of Louisiana is going to buy that, and the little girls outside of Louisiana that would have an interest in "Barbie" won't know a thing about Angel Reese.

Should have been Bayou Barbee instead

Worth a shot, but would never have succeeded.
