Report: LSU Center DJ Chester Expected To Move To Guard, Here's OL Options For The Spring

Wilson Alexander of The Advocate is reporting new offensive line transfer Braelin Moore from Virginia Tech will take over the center position on LSU's offensive line this spring.

DJ Chester, who started all 13 games at center for LSU last season, will slide over to one of the guard spots.

Moore, a 6-3, 303-pound lineman, started at guard for the Hookies in 2023 and moved over to starting center this last season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

LSU is replacing four offensive linemen this offseason. Here are some players that will compete for starting spots this spring:

Guard Options:
DJ Chester: 6-6, 322lbs - Redshirt Sophomore
Paul Mubenga: 6-5, 315 - Redshirt Sophomore
Josh Thompson: 6-5, 301 - 5th-year Senior (Northwestern transfer)
Carius Curne: 6-5, 335 - Freshman (Early enrollee)
Coen Echols: 6-3, 318 - Redshirt Freshman
Bo Bordelon: 6-6, 310 - Redshirt Junior
Solomon Thomas: 6-4, 330 - Freshman (Early enrollee)

Tackle Options:
Tyree Adams: 6-7, 313 - Redshirt Sophomore
Weston Davis: 6-6, 310 - Redshirt Freshman
Ory Williams - 6'8, 334 - Redshirt Freshman
Ethan Calloway: 6'7, 315 - Redshirt Freshman
Tyler Miller: 6-5, 337 - Freshman (Early enrollee)
Josh Thompson: 6-5, 301 - 5th-year Senior (Northwestern transfer)

Nice that was made official, but I think most of us expected this to happen. I wish Chester the best and appreciate his willingness to play center last season, realizing he is probably much better suited to play guard.

So who is backup center? Will DJC have to practice both positions ? Who can give Moore a breather if Chester is already in at gaurd?

I believe Chester will be an outstanding guard. He simply is not a center, he is too tall and had to learn it out of necessity.

Adams almost has starting LT licked up and Thompson will get o e of the guard spots or RT if Bordelon or Weston Davis look like they aren’t ready. That leaves one guard spot between Chester, Mubenga, Curne and Thomas. Either of the two true freshmen coming in could jump everyone else and start at guard next year. Curne and Thomas are that good. For now I say BK starts the year out with as much experience as he can get for Clemson:
LT: Adams
LG: Mubenga
C: Moore
RG: Chester
RT: Thompson

By mid October the OL could very well look more like:
LT: Adams
LG: Curne/Thomas
C: Moore
RG: Thompson
RT: Davis/Bordelon

Whichever players start, run blocking needs to be the priority this spring, pass blocking was very good so pass block teaching is very good from coaching standpoint

Figured Bordelon could play OT as well, but would be great if one of the RS Fr can earn that spot

Protect Nuss so he can deliver the ball on schedule to dynamic WRs/TEs, open a crease for our RB's, and we'll walk out of Clemson with a BIG W!

No doubt, but I will be very surprised to see our OL, in game 1, blow CU's DL off the ball. Our RB's will need to make some plays with a little daylight and turn it into something bigger.

Good, he was one of the worst C's I've seen at LSU. Wasn't he ranked dead last in the power 5 as a C?

I get this, but even when his role was well defined (hit guy in front of you), he got his arse pushed back. All we heard was that he was physical, but confused at times, be I've never seen it.

Let's hope he gets stronger and had a chip on his shoulder, because the whole OL last year was soft.

It's a bit different skill set playing center as opposed to guard. I still think Chester could be outstanding. And as stated before, he played center last season out of necessity.
